Our DIY experts have designed this practical and hands-on six-week course to enable adults to take on a variety of common DIY repair and improvement tasks around the home.
The course is open to all adults aged 19+.
There are no formal entry requirements for this experience - you just need a keen interest in construction and saving money!

We will cover everything from the importance of health and safety to the correct use of materials and tools for each activity.

We will encourage you to discuss your household projects so they can be incorporated into our group exercises. Ad-hoc group discussions on more in-depth subjects will also be considered and agreed by group consensus.
Please contact our Learning for Leisure team should you have any questions concerning this.
There are no assessment criteria - just observe, have a go and enjoy!
All materials will be included in the cost you pay.
Please note that you are likely to get messy, so consider wearing appropriate clothing. You will be working within a practical environment so steel-capped safety shoes must be worn in the workshop at all times.

Mother-of-two Angela Ward returned to Derby College to study painting and decorating with a clear goal in mind – to set up in business.
With skills and qualifications under her belt, she is now planning to launch her own venture decorating children’s bedrooms with bespoke artwork and murals.
Angela had previously worked with elderly people as a carer before giving up her job to bring up her children. But she was determined to pursue her entrepreneurial dreams, so enrolled at College as a mature learner.
Her high quality work, dedication and professional approach earned her the Construction Built Environment prize, sponsored by Bowmer & Kirkland, at our 2014 Peak Awards.
It has been a struggle to juggle College and home life but I have loved every minute of it. The Peak Awards were a lovely way to finish my Derby College experience.
