Course Summary

The Higher National Diploma (HND) in Building Services Engineering and the Built Environment is a two-year, part-time distance learning programme. This course is designed as a 'top up' from the two-year part-time Higher National Certificate in Construction and the Built Environment.   

This programme is delivered through a virtual learning environment (VLE) where your assignments are issued with deadlines.  The assignments will be accompanied by learning resources to get you started. This flexible programme of study allows you to fit your learning around your work and home life, ideal for anybody unable to commit to attending College for a full day each week. 

You will need to allow a minimum of five hours per week to complete this course. However, you will also be expected to attend some workshop tutorials (dates to be confirmed at the start of the course).

You will be supported in your independent studies through weekly tutorials online or in person with our highly experienced lecturers who have both practical and academic experience within construction management and quantity surveying. 

The course is aligned with professional body requirements and provides a progression route to the professional qualifications offered by the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineering, Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). 

It is designed to give you knowledge and understanding of how new and traditional technologies, management systems and scientific concepts affect the planning, design and production of construction projects.  You will also learn how to manage health, safety and welfare during the design and production of buildings, and will develop your ability to work independently and as part of a team on projects.

Through our Virtual Learning Environment, you will be able to access video editing programmes and Microsoft 365 for free.   

Entry requirements

All applicants will be interviewed over the telephone or in person to discuss their qualifications, experience and any other related issues. 

You will need a Higher National Certificate in Building Services Engineering.

We also welcome applicants who lack institutional qualifications. All such applicants will be interviewed and may be set an appropriate piece of work upon which a judgement will be made, taking into account their academic potential and relevant experience.

You will need to be aged 18 or over at the beginning of the course.

Course Content

It is taken that applicants will already have achieved an eight-unit HNC and need to 'top-up' to the 16-unit HND. 

Please note that the programme will change depending on what units you have achieved for the HNC.

Modules may be discussed prior to starting the course.

How will I be assessed?

The HND programme consists of a minimum of 16 units (minimum 240 credits). Each unit is assessed by a combination of assignments, simulated exercises, academic posters, presentations (including voice-over PowerPoint presentations and videos) and project work through a Virtual Learning Environment.   All assessment methods have been designed to focus on skills specific to the industry while incorporating key transferable skills.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

  • Drawing equipment such as an A3 drawing board, 30-60 and 45 degree set squares, scale rule and 0.5 mechanic pencil would be advantageous but not essential.
  • For voice-over PowerPoint presentations you will need access to a microphone.  Access to video recording equipment such as a SMART phone will also be advantageous. 
  • Computer with internet access (with the ability to run AutoCAD Architecture which can be downloaded for free)
  • Windows 7 Operating System and above
  • Microsoft Office 2010 and above

What can I do after this course?

The course is aligned with professional body requirements and provides a progression route to the professional qualifications offered by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). 

It also provides a progression path to the second or third year of a degree or honours degree programme, depending on the match of the Edexcel BTEC Higher National units to the degree programme in question.  It will also support career progression to management level within the construction industry, architecture and quantity surveying

Work experience led straight to a job for design technician Ethan

Valuable work experience gained on his Derby College Professional Construction course has led teenager Ethan Gaunt straight to his ideal job.
 
The 18-year-old form Alvaston is now employed full-time as a junior technician with Pride Park-based engineering design consultants Jackson Purdue Lever.
 
Ethan is one of several students in recent years to be taken on by the firm, which offers students work experience as part of its involvement with Derby College Employment and Skills Academy. He completed the Level 3 extended diploma in Construction and the Built Environment at Derby College in summer 2018, gaining a triple distinction*.
 
Ethan’s mentor and Jackson Purdue Lever director, Stuart Lever, is pleased with Ethan’s progress. He said: “I interviewed Ethan and was impressed with him right from our first meeting. He is very capable so we need to give him work that challenges him.
 
“We value our links with Derby College. We’re been working with the careers academy for five years and we’ve kept on everyone who has come to us for work experience. It’s an arrangement that works so well that we’re taking on another two students on work experience from Ethan’s course in the next few weeks.”

The course content was interesting, but I think one of the best things about Derby College is its links with industry. “Through the Academy I got the chance of 12 weeks’ work experience with Jackson Purdue Lever. It went well and in the second year of my diploma I spent one day a week with the firm.


The company took me on as a junior technician straight from college.


I was fortunate as I didn’t have to go through the usual process of applying for jobs and formal interviews as the directors had already known me for nearly two years.
