Course Summary

Do you want to further your career within the fashion retail sector?

This course will equip you with the skills and knowledge needed for a fast-paced and ever-changing industry. You will explore fashion commerce and its related disciplines, covering both design fundamentals and how to generate new trends and ideas.

The course will support your progression into a wide range of career opportunities including fashion marketing, buying, visual merchandising, retail management, styling and display, or continued study at college or university.

The course will be delivered in 12 hours each week and taught in dedicated studio facilities. Delivery will consist of lectures, seminars, studio practice, online research and industrial engagement.

You will be working with a team of experienced teaching staff and industry professionals while you explore and learn different skills and techniques including creative and theoretical understanding. You will be able to put learnt skills into practice through completion of project-based assignments and self-directed and online study that will enhance your own personal and professional development.  You will be expected to undertake at least a further ten hours of self-study a week in addition to the taught hours.  

The programme consists of eight units including Products, Marketing and Advertising, and Cultural Understanding in Fashion. You will explore influences such as culture, sub-culture and lifestyle trends. The course will be delivered at the Joseph Wright Campus.

This programme is regulated by HEFCE and awarded by Pearson Edexcel. On satisfactory completion of the course, you will be awarded the BTEC Level 4 HNC in Fashion and Textiles.

This programme will run with a minimum of eight students.  In 2016-17 we enrolled eight students onto this new programme. 

Entry requirements

All applicants will be invited to an interview to discuss their qualifications, experience and any other related issues. You will need:

  • A minimum of 48 UCAS points or an Advanced Diploma, NVQ Level 3, Access to HE qualification or the equivalent.

You will also need:

  • Five GCSEs at grades 9-4 (A*-C) to include English and Maths

We also welcome applicants who do not have subject-specific qualifications.  All such applicants will be interviewed and may be set an appropriate piece of work upon which a judgement will be made, taking into account their academic potential and relevant experience.

You will need to be aged 18 or over at the beginning of the course.

  • Visual Communication in Art and Design
  • Ideas Generation and Development in Art and Design
  • Contextual and Cultural Referencing in Art and Design
  • Professional Practice in Art and Design
  • Design Application in Fashion
  • Fashion Promotion and Marketing
  • Cultural Understanding in Fashion
  • Visual and Personal Presentation



How will I be assessed?

While on the programme, you will be assessed using a variety of methods: assignments, reports, individual presentations, group presentations, interactive displays, seminars and case studies. All assessment methods have been designed to focus on skills specific to the industry while incorporating personal and professional skills.

Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?

You will need to have access to a computer with Microsoft Office [this software can be downloaded free of charge from Derby College] and general stationery including a memory stick. Access to Creative Suite such as Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign would be an advantage but not mandatory.

Prior to starting on the programme you will be sent an equipment list outlining the resources needed for studying the Fashion Retail course, such as reading resources, sketchbooks and art materials.  The cost of these resources is not expected to be above £50. 

Trips on the HNC in Fashion and Textiles (Retail Focus) course are not mandatory. However attendance is highly recommended to enhance your studies and broaden your learning experience. You will be given at least eight weeks’ notice prior to a trip taking place. Some trips could be residential and costs will range between approximately £50 and £300.

What can I do after this course?

After successfully completing the HNC Fashion and Textiles (Retail Focus) course, you can progress to a suitable HND Fashion and Textiles course, enhancing your learning and level of qualification. You can also continue your career by undertaking employment within commerce, including roles such as art director, fashion buyer, stylist or marketing manager.

Richard Auzins

Starting out in a retail career with M&S

Fashion enthusiast Richard Auzins has used his Diploma in Visual Merchandising as a springboard to working with Marks & Spencer

Richard has started out as a warehouse operative at the company’s distribution centre in Castle Donington, with a view to progressing his merchandising career within M&S. He especially enjoys dealing with the online sales side of the operation.

Richard had originally considered university but then discovered the specialist advanced course in Visual Merchandising at Derby College. Keen on keeping up with latest fashion trends, the course enabled him to translate his passion for fashion into a career.

Although I’m working in logistics, I’m still involved with fashion and homewares every day. The Derby College course helped me get the job and having a qualification in retail merchandising has made me more confident in sharing my ideas at work.

I’d like to move into visual merchandising one day but at the moment I enjoy what I do and M&S is a great business to work for.
