Maintenance Technician apprentice


Maintenance Technicians ensure that production equipment perform to the highest standard attainable. To facilitate production targets regarding Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost within High-Speed Manufacturing environments.

What will the apprentice be doing?

the work would cover a broad range of activities including refurbishment, testing, installation, relocation, reconfiguration, fault finding and the on-going planned maintenance of a variety of equipment. This requires the application of a complex blend of skills, knowledge, and occupational behaviours across the electrical, electronic, and mechanical systems disciplines.

The role with report into John Hall, Store Controller, based at the Derby Unit.  Initially the role will be heavily involved in assisting with refurbishments based at the unit, the aim is for the individual to eventually attend site visits shadowing an experienced Field Service Engineer.

The role is part of the Service team.

Initially you will be based in the unit and will be responsible for:

Helping to refurbish machinery ready to go out to client’s site

Carrying out general maintenance on equipment

Carrying out repairs on equipment

Going on site to support experienced site engineers

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

The business currently has 2 areas of engineering: Core business (Mail inserting and sortation) and Intralogistics (parcel sorters, machine automation and robotics). Bothl provide the opportunity for development and job satisfaction whilst working with market leading engineering.

A service/maintenance technician is employed as either a site engineer, field service engineer or a combination of both depending on business requirements. There are continual skills development with the opportunity to attend training courses at Bowe HQ in Augsburg, Germany, and third-party equipment suppliers.

From a service/maintenance technician, with the appropriate knowledge/experience, there will be the opportunity to advance into a Technical Specialist role and further on to become a Technical Support Engineer. With the necessary composite skills, a move into Engineering management is attainable.

GCSE or equivalent Maths and English (Grade A-C / 9-4) Essential

Things to consider

25 days plus bank holidays. Auto enrolled first 6 months if criteria is met, invited to join the company pension scheme, 4.5% employee contribution, 6% employer contribution, this increases to 8% after being in the scheme for 2 years. Day shifts initially, may need to work shifts once competent.
