Apprentice Design Engineer


Training for, working towards and becoming competent in the position of Design Engineer, encompassing the following duties, requirements and responsibilities

Working days: 4.5 days Working hours: Standard week = 8 ½ hours Monday to Thursday / 4 ¼ hours on Friday (6am or 7am start time) Time allocated for lunch: 30 minutes Monday to Thursday / no lunch break on Friday.

What will the apprentice be doing?

·         To interpret contract specifications and design dampers and associated products in accordance with and to comply with such specifications.


·         To produce general arrangement and detailed manufacturing drawings using a CAD system.


·         To produce calculations and documents as necessary in support of such drawings and project design.


·         To liaise with clients and suppliers on engineering matters to ensure project design and manufacture is carried out effectively and to both the clients and the company’s required standard.


·         To assist with the maintenance of records and databases.


·         To liaise with internal departments to ensure their input and support to the contract.


·         To provide effective liaison with and between the customer, DTL and the fabricator to ensure adherence to all aspects of the agreed contract. This will involve visits to both the customer and the fabricator.


·         To provide support on site (including sub-contractors) when required. This may involve site supervision and manual site work in the UK, overseas and offshore.


·         To undertake any other duties as may be required from time to time.


·         To undertake and attend further education to the level of HNC (min) in a Mechanical Engineering (Technical) discipline.


·         To undertake further training as may be required from time to time.


·         To fully support the Directors and management in the development and maintenance of the business.



What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Engineering Tecnician Level 3

Pathway Engineering Technical Support (Standard) – Level 3 - Training will be completed both on site and at college on day release at Derby College Roundhouse

Mandatory Qualifications

After a period of foundation skills and technical knowledge development all apprentices will be required to achieve the following qualifications:

Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)
After a further period of skills and technical knowledge development all apprentices will be required to achieve the following qualifications:

Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) – Technical Support
Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge)

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Initially into a Plater / Welder / Fitter role.

This could develop onwards into a team leader / chargehand role.
