Learning Agreement Signed
Derby College has joined forces with Unity, formerly the Ceramic and Allied Trades Union, to provide essential skills training for its members.
The partnership agreement was recently signed at Royal Crown Derby which is one of the first companies to work with Unity and Derby College to provide free literacy skills courses for staff.
The course, part of the College’s Skills for Life programme is available to all employees who wish to improve their English skills.
Unity Assistant General Secretary Garry Oakes said: “This new partnership agreement will enable us to work more closely with Derby College to provide further education courses for our members in the local area.
“Lifelong learning has really come to the fore in recent years and it is vital that unions take up the challenge. There is no longer a guarantee of a job for life so we need to make sure that training and development is available to all of our members - particularly those who have had little access to training in the past. We look forward to a productive partnership with Derby College.”
Derby College Vice Principal Steve Logan added: “Skills for Life provide the skills necessary for adult to function well as an individual, in the workplace, within the family or on a wider level. We provide a wide range of training courses both at College and in the workplace in literacy, numeracy and IT skills and have strong links with unions throughout the UK and across all industry sectors.”
Royal Crown Derby Personnel Manager Pam Ridgarde concluded: “It is in the best interests of employers, employees and trade unions that staff maintain and upgrade their skills wherever possible, particularly in the current economic climate. We are grateful to Unit and to Derby College for enabling this to happen.”
