Learners' Exhibition Celebrates Motherhood

Motherhood celebration

A group of local women who attend English classes at Derby College have created a special exhibition celebrating the universal role of mothers which is now on display at Derby Museum and Art Gallery until the end of March.

The collage of photographs, poems, pictures and personal messages have been created by the group of 12 women who all attend the ESOL course (English for Speakers of Other Languages) at Peartree Community School, run by Derby College.

The group has been helped by artists from Derby Museum and Art Gallery and the exhibition will be officially launched on Saturday February 6 when the women will meet visitors to explain the thinking behind the exhibition.

ESOL Lecturer Jodi Wainwright explained: “Mother is undoubtedly the most beautiful and lovable word in any language.

“Our ESOL learners originally come from a variety of countries from within Europe and Asia and have been learning English for between six months and four years.

“Despite their varied backgrounds, the students are united in their common pursuit of English. Their warmth, generosity and enthusiasm shine through and this exhibition is designed to bring their worlds to Derby and share their own experiences both as mothers and daughters through words and pictures.

“They are all very excited about seeing their work professionally exhibited at Derby Museum and Art Gallery and to particularly sharing their experiences with other College ESOL learners to encourage them in their English language studies.”

The exhibition runs at Derby Museum and Art Gallery until March 28 2010.
