Gold for JWC Maths Champion
An A level student at the Joseph Wright Centre has won a Gold award in a national maths competition.
Michael Thomas (16) from Derby was among the highest scores in the UK Maths Challenge, entered by more than 600,000 students nationally and organised by the UK Mathematics Trust.
He narrowly missed out on going through to the next stage – the Oympiad competition - but is delighted with his success none the less.
Michael was among 40 maths A level students at Derby College’s JWC which entered the annual competition for the first time this year. Seven other students achieved Bronze medals.
Michael, who was home schooled since he was seven, attended College part time last year to take his maths AS level a year early and is now in his second year for Maths and Further Maths – despite being only 16.
He said: “We sat the test in exam conditions and it was the hardest thing I have ever done. I couldn’t believe it when I got a Gold medal which is fantastic.”
