Apprentice Chef
Seven apprentice chefs who are completing their qualifications in the workplace supported by Derby College took part in an Apprentice Chef competition at The Engine Shed restaurant as part of National Apprenticeship Week.
The apprentices were given two hours to cook and serve a three course meal: orange and grapefruit cocktail, Chicken Kiev and Pilaf rice and Baked Alaska which was judged by Shirley Sweeney and Richard Cowlishaw from Derby College’s Culinary Arts Academy and East Midlands Apprenticeship Service Marketing Manager Jane Williams.
The winner was Danielle Carrington (20) from The Dog Inn at Pentrich with Aaron Lawrence (20) from the Isaac Walton Hotel in Dovedale coming second and third place went to Alison Edwards (19) from Kedleston Golf Club.
Danielle, who has worked at the Dog Inn for four years, said: “I’ve never done any sort of competition before and, although it was a bit stressful, it has been a really experience and I am delighted to have won.”
Derby College Vice Principal Maureen Finch said: “The standard of the competition has been extremely high and all these apprentices’ employers should be very proud of their achievements.”
