Visa and Immigration

EEA Nationals

If you are a national of the European Economic Area (EEA) or have been living in an EEA country for 3 years, or from Switzerland, you do not need a student visa.  If you have been accepted on a course of study, you can enter the UK freely and live here for the duration of your course.  You may also be entitled to reduced tuition fees.

Please contact us on +44 1332 520150 or alternatively you can contact the International Team via email for further information.

Non EEA Nationals

You must apply for Entry Clearance as a Student before travelling to the UK.
In order to apply for entry clearance as a student, you will need to show that you:

• have received and accepted an unconditional offer of study from the College
• have the appropriate qualifications and ability to complete the course
• plan to leave the UK at the end of your course
• don't have the intention of working or engaging in business unless permitted to
• are able to pay for your tuition fees and living expenses without needing to work

Applying or Entry Clearance as a Student

Firstly, you will need to check your country's fact sheet to find out where your nearest British Embassy or High Commission is.  Then, you must visit their website to find out how to apply.  Once you have the information, you can download your application form from the UK visas website.

You need to provide the following:

• An unconditional offer letter from the College
• Proof you have enough funds to pay for the first year’s course fees, plus £5400 for maintenance (accommodation, food, travel etc).
• Proof that you plan to leave the UK upon completion of your course
• Current education achievement certificates
• Two recent, passport photographs
• Your valid passport or travel document
• The visa cost

Remember to photocopy the above documents for your own security.

You may also be required to supply additional documentation; the visa office will give you country specific details. If you do not supply every document required, your application is likely to be refused.

The Entry Clearance Officer (ECO) at the Embassy or High Commission will look at your application to decide if it meets their requirements.  They may ask for further documents or even an interview at this stage.  If you are successful, the ECO will put your visa or entry certificate in your passport. If you are unsuccessful, you will get a refusal notice and an appeal form.

Successful Application for a Student Visa

If you are successful, you should photocopy your visa and begin making travel arrangements.  You also need to let Derby College know as soon as possible.  Keep a copy of the visa in your hand luggage for when your travel.

Unsuccessful Application for a Student Visa

If you aren't successful, let the College know as soon as possible and keep your paperwork in a safe place.
