Statutory Proposal - Model B – Dissolution
PROPOSAL UNDER SECTION 51 (1) (C) OF THE FURTHER AND HIGHER EDUCATION ACT 1992 (THE ACT) FOR THE DISSOLUTION OF THE FURTHER EDUCATION CORPORATION OF SOUTH EAST DERBYSHIRE COLLEGE UNDER SECTION 27 OF THE ACT
NAME OF THE FURTHER EDUCATION CORPORATION: Derby College
ADDRESS: The Roundhouse, Roundhouse Road, Pridepark, Derby, DE24 8JE
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE EDUCATION PROVIDED AT THE INSTITUTION:
Derby College was established in March 2002 as a result of the merger between three Derbyshire Colleges.
- Our three main sites are The Roundhouse, Joseph Wright 6th Form Centre, Broomfield Hall and Prince Charles Avenue
- The College supports approximately 30,000 learners per year from a diverse range of social and educational backgrounds, all with individual learning needs – our key strength is meeting these individual requirements and ensuring our learners are at the heart of what we do.
- 4,000 of these are full-time learners, predominantly 16-18, 1,000 are apprentices, 800 HE learners and 3000 Part-time learners.
- 400 14-16 learners from 15 local schools
- Over 16,000 learners never visit the College sites – they are based out in industry, across the country, supported by our team of professionals, working in partnership with our 950 employers. Our employers range from local SME’s to national global organisations.
- With 1,450 team members Derby College is a hub of expertise and specialist skills, which we utilise to support our learners and employers wherever they are
- We have an overall turnover of approximately £50m.
- In December 2007, Derby College was one of only 26 training providers nationally and the only provider in the East Midlands to be awarded the Training Quality Standards (TQS). The Standard recognises the best organisations delivering training and development solutions to employers and confirms that the College understands and exceeds employers’ needs.
- The College has also achieved the Matrix Standard which is testament to the high quality of the information, advice and guidance that the College offer to our clients.
- All good or outstanding grades were awarded during our last inspection including Grade 1 for both capacity to improve and our Skills for Life provision
REASONS FOR PROPOSING DISSOLUTION OF THE SOUTH EAST DERBYSHIRE COLLEGE CORPORATION:
The governing body of South East Derbyshire College is proposing to merge with Derby College. This would be achieved by the dissolution of the further education corporation of South East Derbyshire College and the transfer of its property, rights and liabilities to the further education corporation of Derby College. The governing body of Derby College is separately proposing to the Secretary of State that the name of the college be changed to Derbyshire College to reflect the changed nature of the college.
The principal reason advanced by the governors of the colleges in support of the proposal is to create a cost effective high quality general further education college which builds on the strengths of the two colleges. The merged college will also meet the changing needs of learners and support the developing local infrastructure and the regional economy. The merged college will aim to increase learner participation and success rates within the area – particularly where there is significant under representation amongst identifiable groups of potential learners.
Date proposed for the dissolution of the corporation: 31 January 2010
