Emma Godber

Derby College Group Supported Internship student Emma Godber

Study Type: School Leaver Vocational
Study Location: Ilkeston
Subject Studied: Inclusion Curriculum (for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities)

Emma joined the RSPCA as a Supported Intern, where she quickly became a valued member of the animal care team.

Her role gave her real responsibility, hands‑on experience and the confidence to see a future career within the sector.

She said: “My internship helped me show what I can do – not just talk about it in an interview, I now have real experience and confidence in my future.”

“It was an opportunity to prove myself to an employer and improve my employability skills.”

During her internship, Emma took on a wide range of practical responsibilities that directly supported animal welfare.

These included caring for animals daily, following individual health plans, supporting training and enrichment activities, and working alongside staff and volunteers.

Emma wasn’t observing from the side-lines — she was trusted to do the job properly and contribute as part of the team.

At the beginning of her placement, Emma found communication and teamwork difficult. Working closely with RSPCA staff and supporting volunteers helped her grow both personally and professionally.

She added: “It helped me gain confidence in my abilities and gave me real industry experience.”

“Now, I feel much more confident engaging with people in a professional way.”

This experience helped Emma develop the transferable skills that employers look for across all industries.

For Emma, being able to prove herself in a real workplace made the internship truly valuable.

Constructive feedback and a supportive environment helped her improve continuously while still being challenged and she now encourages other students to make the most of Supported Internship opportunities.

“There’s lots of support, but you have to be willing to put the work in and try new things – enthusiasm really stands out to employers.”

She also believes employers benefit hugely from working with Supported Interns, gaining motivated team members who are keen to learn and contribute.

Emma’s success has already opened new doors. The RSPCA has expressed interest in her progressing to a Level 3 apprenticeship, and she now feels confident applying for roles and attending interviews.

My internship helped me show what I can do.
