Animal care access course takes Celine a step closer to working with elephants

Broomfield Hall animal care student Celine Frosthagen is another step closer to her dream job of becoming a zookeeper and working with elephants.

Celine, 22, is currently on the Access to HE Diploma (Animal Science) and is in her fifth year of study at Derby College Group’s  land-based site.

She has previously completed levels 1, 2 and 3 in animal care and will progress to the Animal Management (Zoo and Wildlife) degree with DCG this September.

Celine, who came to England from Sweden when she was nearly 13, grew up in the countryside and was surrounded by farm animals as well as having pets at home.

Her interest in animals first started when as a toddler she liked playing with wild creatures such as frogs, worms and hedgehogs.

Living in New Zealand for a while and being surrounded by cows and sheep also helped shape Celine’s future career plans.

She was further influenced by a family friend who works as a ranger at South Africa’s famous Kruger National Park – a ‘really cool achievement’.

Celine said: “I want to become a zookeeper and work with safari animals, although my ultimate dream job has always been to specialise in working with elephants.

“Alongside the access course I am doing work experience at Peak Wildlife Park, helping to look after a variety of animals including penguins, wallabies and lemurs.

“I get to help with cleaning and feeding and doing other tasks around the park, such as showing visitors how we feed the penguins.”

Celine, who lists snakes, lizards and bigger animals among her favourites at College, loves the practical hands-on aspects of studying at Broomfield.

She added: “The access course is great if you feel you need extra support before starting university. We cover such a wide range of subjects too, such as evolution, biodiversity, mammalian reproduction and nutrition.

“I’m a practical person and much prefer assignments and theory-based work. I don’t do well in exams and there aren’t any on the access course.

“I enjoy being outdoors and I like the freedom studying at Broomfield brings.
