The programme, known as ASPIRE, gives students real-world experience at Alstom’s historic Derby Litchurch Lane Works, where they support live engineering projects while developing the skills, confidence and independence needed to move into long-term employment.
Building on a strong partnership
The initiative builds on an established relationship between Alstom and Derby College Group.
Recognising Alstom’s inclusive culture, Derby College’s Inclusion Job Coach, Tom Eisenberg, approached the business to explore supported internship opportunities.
This collaboration led to the co-design of the first placements for students Harry Hedges and Aaron Donaldson.
Harry brings a lifelong passion for trains, from model railways to volunteering at the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway.
Aaron was selected for his strong engineering ability and clear focus on securing long-term employment.
Both were identified as ideal candidates to benefit from hands-on industry experience in a live operational environment.
Structured preparation and on-site support
Following a carefully structured six-month preparation period, both interns began their placements in March 2026.
This included tailored training, ongoing support and a gradual introduction to the Alstom site to ensure a confident and successful transition into the workplace.
Amy Bacon, Supported Internship and Work Experience Lead at Derby College Group, said:
“This partnership is opening doors to truly life changing opportunities for our students, giving them the chance to gain real world experience in a supportive and inclusive environment.
“Alstom have shown a genuine commitment to our interns, ensuring a smooth and confident transition into the workplace.”

Supporting a £60m train refurbishment programme
The interns are contributing to Alstom’s CrossCountry Voyager refurbishment project, valued at around £60 million.
The programme will upgrade more than 300 train carriages, including new interiors, improved lighting and modernised systems, providing a rich and varied learning environment.
James Spencer, Senior Project Manager at Alstom, said:
“We are very pleased the Voyager refurbishment project can offer its support in this exciting new Alstom-supported internship programme providing workplace experience.
“The mechanical and electrical work scopes provide a broad range of hands-on experience, helping develop valuable skills for future careers.”
Now fully embedded within the team, Harry and Aaron are working directly on trains, gaining practical engineering skills, building confidence and making a real contribution to a live refurbishment programme.
Commitment to inclusion and future growth
The ASPIRE programme reflects Alstom’s commitment to inclusion and Derby College Group’s focus on creating meaningful pathways into employment for young people with SEND.
Plans are already in place to expand the initiative, with additional interns expected to join later this year.
