Spectrum Housing gets a taste of British Sign Language

Staff and residents at Spectrum Housing have completed a British Sign Language introductory course at Derby College Group’s Community College in Ilkeston to enable them to better communicate with others who are hearing impaired.

Spectrum Housing is a not for profit Community Interest Company who provide accommodation and support for vulnerable people in the Derbyshire area, including those with learning difficulties, mental health issues and people facing homelessness.

Volunteer support worker Lee joined the course to be able to better communicate with one of the younger residents who is profoundly deaf and wears a cochlear implant. She said: “I’ve learnt a lot and really enjoyed the course.”

Nikki from Spectrum Housing concluded: “This taster course has been really useful for both staff and residents.  The teacher really puts you at your ease and we have learnt the basics to be able to get by.”
