Derby College Group (DCG) is delighted to support the reopening of The Derby City Lab

DCG student student Hannah Denis (17) from Borrowash had the privilege of cutting the ribbon for the reopening of the Derby Lab.

Hannah, who is studying English Literature, History and Music A-levels and hopes to become a music journalist, was supported by Mollie Cox, Environmental and Sustainability Officer and Carol Dixon, Director of Employee Partnerships at DCG.

The lab has relocated to its new home on Level 2 of the Derbion, which has become one of its partners for 2024.

The revamped lab debuted with guests from Marketing Derby’s Annual Business Event, and now will be open to the public seven days a week.

The Derby City Lab aims to involve the community in understanding the city’s growth and investment plans, inspired by Urban Rooms in cities like London, Amsterdam, and Shanghai.

The lab features the City Living Room providing detailed information about the investment pipeline and showcase the Derby City Model—a 3D model of Derby’s city centre illustrating ongoing regeneration.

The lab will host discussions, and be staffed by Marketing Derby and recruited ‘lab assistants.’

Kate Martin, Deputy Principal at DCG said of the Derby City Lab: “It is really good that DCG was able to part of the opening ceremony.

“And we look forward to being able to use the lab in the future and we are now exploring new ways, as to how we get students involved in the future of the city, through the City Lab.”

Beth McDonald, Managing Director at Derbion, said: “We are delighted to be working with Marketing Derby in bringing the national award-winning Derby City Lab to Derbion.

“We know our visitors will be excited to see the plans and development projects that will transform Derby’s city centre over the coming years.”

Adam Rodgers, inward investment executive at Marketing Derby and Derby City Lab lead, said: “Our fantastic new location enables us to build on the huge success of the award-winning lab.

“It presents a great opportunity to engage with a wide variety of people, gain their feedback and discuss ideas on regenerating the city centre.”
