New Virtual Open Days Support School Leavers

Derby College Group (DCG) is holding three virtual open days this month to support Year 11 pupils considering their options this September.

As well as information on full time study programmes and apprenticeships, there will be details about work experience opportunities, careers advice and the wide range of support available to students.

In each subject area, teaching and support staff will be available online to talk through options via live chat rooms and guide young people through the application process for the study programme or apprenticeship of their choice.

These will include the new T Levels available in Professional Construction, Digital Production, Design and Development and Childcare and Education. These are equivalent to A Levels with a strong focus on work-based learning.

Anyone who has already applied but who wants further information on the study programmes and advice and guidance in light of the cancellation of GCSEs this summer are also encouraged to log on.

Everyone needs to pre-register for any of the online events they want to join beforehand. A dedicated event link will then be sent over 15 minutes before the start of each virtual event.

The first open day on Tuesday May 19 between 3pm and 5pm will focus on Beauty, Business, Childcare, Hairdressing, Health and Social Care, Hospitality and Catering, Professional Education, Retail and Travel and Tourism.

On Wednesday May 20, 3pm to 5pm – information and support will be available on the following subjects - Land-based: Agriculture, Animal Care, Arboriculture, Conservation and Countryside, Equine, Floristry, Horticulture; Construction: Brickwork, Carpentry, Electrical Installation, Painting and Decorating, Plastering, Plumbing and Gas Training; as well as Engineering, Motor Vehicle and the Inclusion curriculum.

The last virtual open day will be on Thursday May 21, again between 3pm and 5pm, is designed for those interested in the College’s wide-ranging A Level and GCSE programmes, Art and Design, Computer Science and Digital, Digital Media and Games Design, Music, Performing Arts.

DCG Vice Principal Kate Martin explained: “These are uncertain times for anyone looking at their future options but particularly Year 11 school pupils who should have been taking their GCSE’s this summer.

“These young people are therefore our priority for these new virtual open days to ensure that they are clear about the options available to them and how to apply in these unprecedented times.

“Although the ideal way is to speak to our teaching and support teams face to face, everyone here has been working hard to ensure that the written and visual information is as comprehensive as possible and the live chat rooms will be staffed to ensure clear one to one advice and guidance.

“Moving forwards, further events will be organised to focus more specifically on our higher education, apprenticeships and adult part time offer and we will be publishing details in the near future.”
