V Level Accounting and Finance

Do you enjoy working with numbers, solving problems and understanding how businesses make financial decisions?  This course is ideal for students who are interested in accounting, finance, business or economics and want to develop valuable analytical and decision-making skills for the future.  It provides a strong foundation for progression to higher education, apprenticeships and careers in areas such as accounting, finance, banking, business management and financial analysis.

You will explore how organisations use financial information to make decisions, analyse performance and manage budgets, while developing an understanding of ethical, regulatory and sustainability issues that affect modern business.  Learning is highly applied, using realistic business scenarios, case studies and financial data to help you develop the skills employers and universities value.

A distinctive feature of this qualification is its focus on interpreting and evaluating financial information in real-world organisational contexts rather than simply learning accounting procedures.  You will build transferable skills including critical thinking, problem-solving, numerical reasoning, communication and digital literacy, preparing you for a wide range of future opportunities.
 

A good standard of numeracy and literacy is recommended, as students will be required to interpret financial information, apply calculations, analyse data and communicate financial findings clearly.

Entry requirements are:

• Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language and Maths.
• An interest in business, accounting, finance or economics.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills.

Students must attend an interview and taster session.
 

This course will help you develop a broad understanding of accounting and finance and how financial information is used within organisations to support decision-making.  You will learn how to interpret, analyse and evaluate financial data, assess organisational performance, and communicate financial information clearly to different audiences.

You will study:

• Financial statements, budgeting and cash flow information.
• Accounting principles and concepts, including accruals, prudence, consistency and materiality.
• Financial performance analysis using ratios, trends and performance indicators.
• Budgeting, costing and investment appraisal techniques to support business decisions.
• The ethical, regulatory and governance responsibilities involved in accounting and finance.
• The impact of sustainability, digital technologies and artificial intelligence on modern financial practice.

Throughout the course, you will apply your learning to realistic organisational scenarios, developing valuable skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, numerical reasoning, communication and digital literacy.  These skills will prepare you for further study, apprenticeships and careers across accounting, finance, business and related sectors.
 

Learning is centred around realistic organisational scenarios, giving you the opportunity to apply accounting and finance knowledge to real-world situations rather than simply learning theory.  You will work with financial statements, budgets, cash flow information, performance data and business case studies to develop your understanding of how organisations use financial information to make decisions.

You will learn through a variety of engaging activities, including:

• Analysing and interpreting financial information from different types of organisations.
• Investigating business scenarios and making evidence-based financial recommendations.
• Applying financial calculations, ratio analysis and budgeting techniques to practical situations.
• Group discussions, presentations and written tasks that develop professional communication skills.
• Using digital tools, including spreadsheet software and accounting systems, to process and present financial information.

Throughout the course, you will build transferable skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, numerical reasoning, digital literacy and professional communication. You will also be encouraged to consider ethical, regulatory and sustainability issues that influence financial decision-making in modern organisations.
 

To support your studies, you will need a commitment to developing your analytical, numerical and communication skills.  As much of the course involves interpreting financial information, completing calculations and presenting findings, you should come prepared to engage with both written and numerical tasks.

You will typically need:

• A notebook or folder to organise your class notes and learning materials.
   
• Pens, pencils and a calculator for financial calculations and analysis.
   
• Access to a computer or laptop for research, coursework and the use of spreadsheets and digital accounting tools.
   
• A positive attitude towards problem-solving, critical thinking and working with financial data.

As the course makes use of digital systems and technologies to generate, analyse and communicate financial information, confidence in using IT and a willingness to develop your digital skills will be beneficial.  Throughout the programme, you will also be expected to demonstrate professionalism, attention to detail and effective communication when presenting financial information and recommendations.
 

You will be assessed through activities that may include:
