Course Information for Students

This qualification is ideal for automotive technicians, vehicle maintenance professionals, and public service personnel (such as emergency responders) who work with or around electric and hybrid vehicles. It’s particularly suited to individuals who already hold a Level 3 qualification in vehicle maintenance and repair and are looking to upskill in electric/hybrid technologies.

Learner entry for these qualifications will be assessed on an individual basis. Selection criteria for entry will take into account each applicant’s existing academic/vocational qualifications and experience in working in the retail automotive industry.

Although not mandatory, it is recommended that learners have three GCSEs, or Scottish Standard Grade/Intermediate in Mathematics, English and a Science-based subject.

It is expected that individuals will already have appropriate vehicle maintenance and repair knowledge and skills at Level 3.

Mandatory Modules

Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Routine Maintenance Activities

  • Learn how to safely carry out routine maintenance on electric and hybrid vehicles.
  • Procedures for isolating and reinstating high-voltage systems, and connecting alternative power sources.
  • Assessed through an online test and practical tasks.

Electric/Hybrid Vehicle System Repair and Replacement

  • Develop the skills to diagnose, repair and replace components within electric/hybrid vehicle systems.
  • Battery disconnection, component testing, and system reinstatement.
  • Assessed through knowledge-based assessments and practical demonstrations.

At DCG, this qualification is taught by our highly experienced automotive teaching team, who bring real-world industry expertise into the classroom and workshop. Learners benefit from:

Face-to-Face Instruction:

  • Classroom-based sessions cover the theory behind electric and hybrid vehicle systems, safety protocols, and diagnostic procedures.

Hands-On Practical Training:

  • In our fully equipped automotive workshops, learners work directly on electric and hybrid vehicles or approved training rigs. This ensures they gain the confidence and competence to handle high-voltage systems safely.

Guided Assessments:

  • Practical and knowledge assessments are supported by our tutors, who provide feedback and guidance throughout the qualification.

Blended Learning Support (where applicable):

Learners may also access digital resources and online assessments, with support available both in person and remotely.

All students must arrive on site with their own personal protective clothing (overalls and safety boots).
