Course Information for Students

This qualification is for those individuals who wish to develop their knowledge, understanding and awareness of the principles of safely installing timber fire door sets and assemblies to ensure fire door safety.

Candidates most suited to this course will ideally be qualified carpenters and joiners with experience of hanging doors or subject specialists involved in fire door related quality and compliance.

Candidates must be aged 16 or above and should be capable of achieving a Level 3 qualification.

As a minimum you must meet at least one of the below criteria:

  • Maths and English at GCSE grade 3 or the equivalent
  • Achievement of a Level 2 qualification
  • Experienced carpenter
  • Experienced joiner

This qualification is available through either:

  • A three-day face-to-face classroom-based course delivered at the College, or
  • An online self-study programme that can be completed in your own time and at your own pace. (This is expected to be ready for October 2026).

Regardless of the delivery method, you will cover the same qualification content and work towards the same City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Fire Door Safety.

During the course you will cover:

  • Introduction, Certification and the Regulatory Reform Order
  • Door Sets, Assemblies and Regulations
  • Passive Fire Protection
  • Fire Doors and the Building Regulations
  • Pre-Installation Requirements and Assessment
  • Fire Door Ratings and Specifications
  • Pre-Installation Glazing Checks
  • Pre-Installation Intumescent Protection
  • Installation of Fire Door Frames and Linings
  • Installation of Ironmongery and Hardware
  • Installation of Fire Doors
  • Post-Installation Inspection and Safety Checks
  • Post-Installation Maintenance Requirements
  • Fire Doors in Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs)
  • Inspection, Compliance and Quality Assurance Procedures

On successful completion of the course you will achieve the City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Fire Door Safety (6581-30).

You can choose to complete this qualification through one of two delivery methods:

Face-to-Face Delivery

The qualification can be delivered as a three-day classroom-based programme led by an experienced tutor. Learning will include tutor presentations, group discussions, case studies, practical examples, and guided activities designed to prepare you for the final assessment.

All teaching resources will be available electronically and learners will be supported throughout the programme.

Please note: classroom-based delivery is subject to availability and sufficient learner enrolments. While we make every endeavour to run programmes as advertised, we reserve the right to cancel or withdraw courses that do not enrol sufficient numbers to make them viable. In the event that a face-to-face course does not run, learners may be offered the opportunity to complete the qualification through the online self-study route.

Online Self-Study Delivery (October 2026 onwards)

The qualification can also be completed through online distance learning, allowing you to study at a time and pace that suits your individual circumstances.

The course is structured into a series of units and modules containing:

  • Learning materials and teaching resources
  • Guided activities and knowledge checks
  • Industry examples and supporting documentation
  • Independent learning tasks and research activities

You will work through each section independently, completing the relevant activities as you progress. At the end of each unit, you will complete a formative assessment to check your understanding before progressing to the next section. Once all units have been completed and you are confident in your knowledge and understanding, you will be entered for the final examination.

The online delivery model allows learners to access resources and complete activities at their own pace while working towards the same qualification and assessment requirements as those attending the face-to-face programme.

As the course is primarily theory based, in the classroom you will require:

  • Notebook and pen
  • Access to a laptop or computer

Assessment is the same regardless of whether you complete the qualification through classroom delivery or online self-study.

Formative Assessment

Throughout the course you will complete a series of formative assessments designed to check your understanding and prepare you for the final examination.

These include:

  • Unit knowledge checks
  • End-of-module assessments
  • Online quizzes and learning activities
  • Tutor-marked or self-assessed review tasks

A formative assessment must be successfully completed at the end of each section before progressing to the next stage of learning.

Final Preparation Assessment

Once all units and formative assessments have been completed, you will undertake a final mock assessment designed to confirm your readiness for the external examination.

Summative Assessment

Following successful completion of the programme and the final mock assessment, you will be entered for the City & Guilds summative examination.

The final assessment consists of an online multiple-choice examination set by the awarding organisation, covering:

  1. Fundamental principles of fire door assemblies and door sets
  2. Regulations and compliance requirements
  3. Principles of installing timber fire door sets and assemblies
  4. Post-installation inspection and maintenance requirements

Candidates must achieve the required pass mark set by City & Guilds in order to achieve the qualification.

  • The holder of this qualification will be able to hang fire doors in compliance with the building regulations and will be able to inspect and advise on existing fire doors.
  • This qualification can be used to support the Gateway knowledge requirements of the Level 3 Advanced Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship. (ST0263).
