Course Information for Students

Level 3 sports massage therapist’s role includes planning, providing and evaluating sports massage treatments. Treatments can be carried out for pre-, post- and inter-event maintenance and restorative purposes, using a range of basic massage techniques. 

Scope of practice is restricted to working on dysfunctional tissue and excludes working on recent acute injuries or pre-existing conditions.

The Level 3 Technical Specialist in Sport Massage Therapy is a technical level qualification aimed at developing the knowledge, understanding and skills needed for a career as a sports massage therapist, either employed or self-employed.

This qualification was developed collaboratively with input from the industry through the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) and the General Council for Massage Therapies (GCMT).

Courses run for 18 weeks and are scheduled for the following dates:

Tuesday: October to March

Times : 6pm – 9pm 

Venue: Broomfield Hall 

Course fees are £2225 full cost 

There is an Adult learner Loan available of £2225 available for this course. 

A minimum of five candidates is needed for the course to run.

You need:

  • English and maths skills suitable for this level of study
  • Good customer service and communication skills
  • Excellent personal hygiene, appearance and professional demeanour
  • A flexibility to work at events and external opportunities throughout the year to aid your development

Candidates need to be physically able to perform to the demands of the role.

Course content will cover:

Learners will cover:

  • Anatomy and physiology for sports massage
  • Principles of health and fitness
  • Professional practice in sports massage
  • The principles of soft tissue dysfunction
  • Fundamentals of sports massage treatments

 

In addition the Bundle supplies the learner with the additional Active IQ qualifications of: 

  • Nutrition, Performance and Healthy Eating
  • Award in Mental Health

Qualifications are linked against the CIMPSA professional standards for a Sport Massage Therapist.

The course will be delivered on our Broomfield Hall campus 

There will be a mixed model of classroom and practical massage teaching sessions to allow for development confidence, knowledge leadership and skill progression that is required to complete the tasks and meet the needs of the industry 

Learners will be expected to provide their own learning equipment in the form of pens, paper, digital devices such as iPad or laptops (there will be some access to college laptops in classrooms and from the library onsite) to support the production of notes and assessment work.

The learner is expected to wear appropriate sport kit when undertaking practical activities 

You may wish to purchase your own massage equipment, fold-away beds and oils in order to practise. This is not, however, a requirement of the course.

Internal Assessment using written assessments and practical demonstrations to evidence industry techniques and skills 

You will be assessed against your skills relating to:

  • Assessment and screening of clients for sports massage treatments
  • Formulation of massage strategies in accordance with clients’ requirements and expectations
  • Application of fundamental sports massage techniques
  • Evaluation of sports massage treatments
  • Anatomy and physiology

Learners who complete this qualification will be able to gain employment and obtain insurance to work as a sports massage therapist.

They can also consider progression to the:

  • Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy
  • Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training

Alternatively, you may wish to seek employment as a sport massage therapist.
