Course Information for Students

Are you interested in exploring what the media sector has to offer? This one-year course is designed to give you a general overview of what media is and the skills you need to succeed.

This qualification gives you the opportunity to develop a range of practical skills used within the sector as well as developing your research skills, critical thinking and reflection skills. The knowledge and skills you’ll develop over the year will be developed by a series of projects focusing on different areas of the media sector.

The Level 2 Extended Certificate is equivalent to two GCSEs. To support your main study programme, personal and professional development and work experience, you will also resit your English Language or Maths GCSE.

You will need at least four 3 grades or above at GCSE, along with a minimum grade 4 in either English Language or Maths.

During the one-year course, you will complete three units:

A1 – Skills Development

A2 – Creative Media Project

B1 – Personal Development

The Skills Development unit is split into two projects to explore and gain different skills in the media sector.

This course will be delivered on-site through a range of lessons which will cover both theory and practical elements.

You are required to supply your own stationery and SD card. All technical equipment required for the course is available for loan from the College.

All three units will be assessed through coursework marked against the BTEC specification and will be internally and externally verified. All evidence produced for assessment is based on practical portfolios of work along with research, idea generation, planning, creative process logs and self-reflections.

GCSE English Language or Maths will be assessed through a controlled assessment, mock exam papers and final exams.
