Who is this course for?
This course is ideal for learners who want to develop the core technical skills required to work as a junior hairdresser or stylist. It suits school leavers, adult learners and those progressing from Level 1 Hairdressing. You should have an interest in hair, creativity and working with clients in a professional salon environment.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must have a minimum grade 4 in either Maths or English and a grade 1 or 2 in the other (or the equivalent). Completion of Level 1 Hairdressing is helpful but not essential. A positive attitude, good communication skills, and enthusiasm for practical learning are required.
What will you learn?
You will develop key hairdressing skills needed to work in a salon. This includes:
- Client consultation and hair analysis
- Shampooing, conditioning and scalp treatments
- Plaiting and twisting
- Temporary colour
- Create an Image
- Blow‑drying and styling techniques
- Health, safety and hygiene
- Professional behaviours and customer care
You will learn how to work safely, effectively and confidently with clients while developing your creativity and technical ability.
How will you learn?
Learning is delivered through a combination of:
- Practical sessions in a realistic salon environment
- Project‑based learning, including planning and completing full hair looks
- Building a portfolio of evidence demonstrating your practical and written work
- Theory lessons to develop underpinning knowledge
- Demonstrations, group work and independent study
This hands‑on, supportive approach helps you develop both technical skills and industry understanding.
What will you need to bring with you?
You will need a professional hairdressing uniform, closed‑toe salon shoes and basic stationery. A folder is required to organise your portfolio and theory work. Jewellery should be kept to a minimum. Any uniform or kit requirements will be confirmed at enrolment.
How will you be assessed?
Assessment includes:
- Practical observations of your cutting, styling and colouring work
- Written assignments to test your understanding
- Online exams for theory units
- Portfolio building to gather evidence of your skills and progress
Assessment is continuous, allowing you to grow in confidence throughout the course.
Where next?
After completing this qualification, you can progress to the VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing, Level 2 Barbering, or an Apprenticeship. You may also move into employment as a junior stylist or salon assistant.
