Who is this course for?
This certificate is suitable for school leavers or 19+ learners (fee payable) who want to get started in a career in floristry.
This is a practical-based module programme that will show you the basic tricks of the trade, enabling you to move forward into a rewarding new profession.
Entry Requirements
- Three GCSEs at a grade 3/D or above, including English and Maths
OR
- A Level 1 Diploma at a Pass grade or above, with an attendance in English and Maths of 95% and above
You will need to be highly motivated and demonstrate a keen interest in floristry.
You will have an interview and parents/carers are welcome to attend the interview. Applicants will also need to present an example of their current work.
If you are a mature learner, we may be able to take into consideration your previous experience in your chosen subject.
What will you learn?
This qualification covers the skills you will need to progress to further learning and training, or to enter the world of work within the floristry industry.
You will study the following mandatory content:
- Tutorial
- Working in the floristry industry
- Floristry designs
- Caring for and maintaining floristry products
- Floristry design principles
- Health and safety for land-based industries
- Work experience – 150 hours total
You will also be required to study GCSE English and/or Maths if you have not obtained a GCSE grade 4/C in these subjects.
How will you learn?
This course will be delivered on-site at Broomfield Hall.
What will you need to bring with you?
You will be required to supply your own:
- Flat closed-toe shoes
- Suitable tools and equipment e.g. secateurs and scissors (you will be advised on what you require during Induction Week)
- Derby College Group tabard
- Derby College Group uniform
- Writing materials
- Approximately £500.00 towards the cost of fresh flowers and foliage (dependent on wholesale costs). This is to be paid in Induction Week.
How will you be assessed?
You will complete a mixture of practical assessments, in-class tests, written projects and assessments and portfolios.
You will also complete English and Maths examinations, if you are studying these subjects.
Where next?
Successful completion of this programme may lead to:
- A Level 3 programme
- A Floristry apprenticeship
- Employment within the floristry industry
