Who is this course for?
Consider this course if you would like an introduction to floristry and to gain practical experience, knowledge and skills covering what the floristry industry is all about. The skills you gain will enable you to advance to Level 2 which will enhance your career progression. This is a practical-based modular programme that will show you basic designs, techniques, skills and knowledge.
Entry Requirements
You need to be motivated and demonstrate a keen interest in this subject. Offers of a place on the course are dependent on your qualifications. You will need:
- A minimum of three GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English and Maths
You will have an interview and initial assessment. Parents are welcome to attend the interview. Applicants can also present any examples of art, design or craft work that they may have done and detail any experiences which are applicable to the course.
What will you learn?
This qualification covers the skills you will need to progress with your learning and training towards a Level 2 qualification. You will study the following content:
- Hand-tied designs
- Funeral designs
- Floral arrangements
- Floral wedding designs
- Identification of cut materials
- Conditioning of materials
- Health and Safety
You will also be required to study Functional English/Maths or GCSE English/Maths if you have not obtained a GCSE grade 4 in these subjects (if you are under 19).
How will you learn?
This course is delivered on-site at Broomfield Hall.
What will you need to bring with you?
You will be required to supply your own:
- Suitable tools and equipment in a tool box e.g. secateurs and scissors. (You will be advised what you require during Induction Week.)
- Derby College Group Apron (purchased from the Department.)
- Writing materials, notepad, pen and folders.
How will you be assessed?
This is a practical-based course that will show you basic designs, techniques, skills and knowledge.
Where next?
From the Level 1 qualification, there is progression to Level 2 which entails studying two days a week, with a day for work experience.
