Who is this course for?
This module provides a general overview of the principles involved in the care of captive zoo animals. Through work-based learning, it allows students to consider the impacts of poor and appropriate husbandry. It also explores how husbandry guidelines are shaped through guidelines set out in legislation. The aim of this module is to give students the underpinning knowledge required to carry out practical animal husbandry tasks competently, confidently and safely within the workplace.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must be 18 years or older.
Demonstrate an understanding of zoo environments.
UCAS points in a relevant subject area are required.
You need to evidence 80 hours work experience in the animal care sector.
Specific entry requirements can be discussed with tutor during interview stage.
What will you learn?
This module will allow students to explore the importance of promoting physical and mental animal health through the use of appropriate husbandry techniques and maintenance of management records. Students will have the opportunity to apply their research and develop their confidence and skills in a practical setting in preparation for the workplace. They will gain experience in the management of animals and develop confidence in general husbandry including monitoring health, feeding regimes and accommodation. Students will also explore the role of legislation and evaluate the contribution of non-governmental organisations to the broadcast and implementation of husbandry guidelines.

How will you learn?
Practical application and theoretical discussions at a local zoological collection. You will be expected to organise your own transportation to the zoological collection. You will need to complete 2 written assessments based on practical skills completed at the zoological collection.
What will you need to bring with you?
Relevant PPE such as safety boots, wellies and outdoor practical clothing.
Laptop devices to complete assignments
How will you be assessed?
2 x written assessments based on practical evidence collated.

You may progress to another relevant certificate of competence.
