BTEC National Diploma in Applied Science
The two-year national diploma course includes a broad range of science content delivered in our laboratories, by carrying out practical experiments and testing hypotheses. You will develop your knowledge of scientific theory that will equip you for higher education and employment within the science sector.

Who is this course for?
The course is aimed at school leavers with a strong interest in science who are keen to work in the science sector or to study a science-related subject at higher education level. The national diploma qualification is equivalent to two A-levels so students will study an additional Level 3 vocational qualification in the second year of the course. After successful completion of the course, students will achieve the equivalent of three A-levels.
Entry Requirements
Minimum entry requirements are GCSE English Language grade 4; GCSE Mathematics grade 4; and GCSE Combined Science grade 4,4 or – if Triple Science was studied – 4,4,4.
What will you learn?
- Principles and Applications of Science I and II (exams)
- Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques (assignments)
- Science Investigation Skills (exam)
- Laboratory Techniques and their Application (assignments)
- Investigative Project (assignments) – completed in June of Year 1 on the residential field trip
In addition, students will study two additional optional units to complete the national diploma.
How will you learn?
This course will be delivered on-site primarily at the Joseph Wright Centre in a combination of laboratories and classrooms. Some laboratory time may take place at the Roundhouse campus.
What will you need to bring with you?
You need standard stationery items including paper, folders, calculators, and a lab coat available from our suppliers Lab Coat Science Academy. The investigative project is completed on a week-long residential field trip to North Wales at the end of Year 1. The cost for this trip is approximately £250. Students in receipt of a bursary will be supported with these costs.
How will you be assessed?
50% of the course is assessed via exams which are sat in January and May/June in both years of the the course. The remaining assessment is via assignments including interviews, posters, presentations, reports and practical tasks. These are scheduled throughout the course.
Where next?
Progression options include HE courses in forensic science, environmental science, nursing, midwifery, biomedical science and a wide range of other scientific disciplines. Other options include direct employment into technician roles, apprenticeships in science or engineering roles.
