Course Information for Students

Who is this course for?

Please note: this academy is currently under re-structuring for the 2025-26 year and further information can be found by contacting the provided email below.

The East Midlands Golf Academy programme provides talented young golfers with the opportunity to develop their golf skills while studying academic qualifications in Sport.

The College’s partnership with EMGA and Morley Hayes Golf Club enables students to benefit from the expertise of highly qualified and respected coaches, which enhances the golf-focussed curriculum.

The Golf Academy is delivered by EMGA. Fees apply. For further details on costs, please email james@emga.co.uk

Entry Requirements

Applications are welcomed from individuals who regularly participate in golf and who show a desire and willingness to develop their sporting performance. Ideally golfers would be playing at – or playing towards – a single figure handicap.

Entry to the Level 3 Sports Coaching and Development course requires candidates to have a minimum of five GCSEs at grades 9-4 (A*- C), including English and Maths, in order to access the full Academy schedule.

Students may also be able to access the Golf Academy by studying at Level 2 or A-levels, depending on whether the timetable fits in with training sessions and fixtures. GCSE resits will take priority over the training sessions.

What will you learn?

The course includes:

  • A dedicated training calendar
  • Opportunities to progress to elite level pathways
  • Options to enter a range of regional and national tournaments
  • Trips and visits
  • Technical and tactical coaching
  • Psychological, physiological and lifestyle management
  • Strength and conditioning support

All students will study a full-time Sport qualification alongside the EMGA requirements.

How will you learn?

This course will be delivered on-site at Broomfield Hall.

Academy sessions will take place at Morley Hayes Golf Course.

What will you need to bring with you?

You will need to have a uniform that is worn every day and when you are on work experience. The minimum expectation for the uniform is that you wear a plain black T-shirt or polo shirt and sweatshirt etc. DCG uniforms can be purchased for £50.

All learners are advised to have a tablet or laptop to aid them with their studies.

There will be additional costs incurred for warm weather training trips.

The Academy fees are set by the East Midlands Golf Academy. Any questions regarding these fees should be addressed to James Whatley at EMGA. As part of the fees, players will receive an EMGA kit package.

How will you be assessed?

Your golfing performance will be developed with the support of a number of specialist and well respected coaches.

Where next?

On successful completion of the course, students can apply for a higher level of study with Derby College Group such as the:

  • Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching

Alternatively they may wish to seek employment within the sports and active leisure sector. A number of East Midlands Golf Academy graduates have gone on to work in golf clubs, to work towards professional status or have been offered golfing scholarships in the United States.
