  • Full time at College There is a wide range of full-time Sports courses offered at Derby College. These develop your skills in areas such as sport and exercise science, personal training, sport development and coaching. We also run various specialist programmes in association with leading sports organisations.

Academies In addition to your full-time Sports course you will also have the option of joining the following Sport Academies: Andrew Flintoff Cricket, Cycle Derby, Derby County Education & Football, Derby County Futsal, Derby Trailblazers Basketball, Derbyshire County Cricket, Performance Golf, Premier Leaders. Please see the list of ‘Academy’ courses in the course listings section below for further details.
  • Apprenticeships Activity leadership, leisure operations and personal training are just some of the professions covered in the apprenticeships offered through Derby College. Securing an apprenticeship in a sport-related career can be competitive and in some cases you might need GCSEs or Functional Skills in English and Maths.
  • Higher education To do certain jobs in the sports industry, particularly those related to sport and exercise science, you will need a degree, foundation degree, HND or HNC. You’ll discover there are higher education opportunities covering everything from Football Studies to Leisure and Recreation. You can also consider the Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching which is delivered at Derby College itself.
  • Jobs You do not need any particular qualifications for jobs such as leisure centre assistant, although it may be an advantage if you have previous customer service experience. Employers could potentially look for coaching, gym instruction or lifeguarding qualifications. Some people start out as an assistant coach, often working on a voluntary basis for a few hours a week, and then do more on-the-job training in the future.

On your marks for an action-packed future in sport. The high-quality teaching, excellent facilities and strong team spirit at Derby College will really help you raise your game.

Katy Morten

Katy Morten

Ahead of the game in a sporting career

Ever since school, Katy Morten had set her heart on becoming a personal trainer.

By the age of just 21, she had already achieved her career goal – thanks to a sport apprenticeship programme run by Derbyshire Dales District Council in partnership with Derby College.

Having secured a full-time job as an instructor at Bakewell Swimming Pool, Katy particularly enjoys helping people to reach their goals – whether it be weight loss or training for a particular sporting event.

I knew I could get nationally recognised qualifications more quickly on an apprenticeship – and having lots of work experience in the industry under my belt would stand me in good stead when looking for employment. Plus, who could argue with being paid to learn?

There’s a real feel-good factor to my job – just knowing you have helped someone improve their lifestyle and become happier with themselves.
