What will the apprentice be doing?

As an Apprentice Painter & Decorator you will paint and apply wallpapers and other decorative and protective finishes to a wide range of surfaces.

Your duties include preparing surfaces, mixing and applying paints and supervising painting projects.

• Other duties will include:
• Working with clients to ensure they complete the work according to the requirements
• Measuring the work area to calculate the time and materials required to complete the project
• Preparing the surrounding area, including covering fixtures and furniture to prevent messes
• Rreparing painting surfaces, including removing old paint, filling holes and cracks and washing walls; choosing the tools to complete the job
• Mixing and matching paints and colours to meet the texture and look required for the project; applying paint, varnishing and other finishes, hanging wallpapers and other decorative products
• Cleaning up painting tools and supplies, replacing fixtures and rearranging furniture after completing the project
• Collaborating with painters on other larger jobs and working with other construction professionals such as, carpenters, electricians and plumbers when necessary

Responsibilities include:

• Setting up equipment and work areas
  correctly
• Leaving areas clean and tidy; stirring and mixing paint,
  paste, putty, and filler correctly
• Equipment care and maintenance
• Vehicle organisation and care
• Removing old paint or wallpaper by sanding, scraping, heat gun, liquid paint removers, or steam stripper
• Calculating quantities
• Wallpapering
• Applying primers, paints, stains, varnishes, and other finishes; using brushes, rollers, or spraying equipment
• Be thorough and pay close attention to detail;
• Be flexible and open to change; able to accept criticism and
  work well under pressure
• Communication skills
• Liaising with clients and colleagues in a clear and professional manner
• Behaving in a professional and polite manner at all times whilst
  representing the company
• Being health and safety conscious at all times
• Any other reasonable duties at the request of the director

Qualifications

GCSE English (Grade 3/D or above or equivalent) Essential

GCSE Maths (Grade 3/D or above or equivalent) Essential

GCSE Science (Grade 3/D or above or equivalent) Desired

Things to consider

• Ilkeston (DE7 8BN) will be your starting point, but you will be working across the East Midlands.
• It is preferred although not essential that the candidate has passed a HS&E in construction test and has a valid Apprentice cscs.
• Physical and mental strength and stamina will be very advantageous as professional painting and decorating is fast paced and often tight deadlines need to be met under pressure.
• Could be countless environments. The candidate must be comfortable in various environments from living spaces, to
  commercial buildings, building sites, to working on scaffolding outside. Before applying please consider that professional
