Assembly & Treatments Apprentice


The general purpose of the role is to: • Produce and assemble parts to the required standard and specification • To manufacture the required quantity, get these signed off and passed for dispatch to the customer • To ensure that the work area is kept clean and tidy

What will the apprentice be doing?

Main tasks and responsibilities:

  • Ensure that all that is needed to produce the components is available
  • Produce components of the required standard and specification
  • Get parts inspected by a Team Leader
  • Complete any rework needed and get the parts agreed as meeting standards

By the end of the apprenticeship, the candidate will have knowledge of different aspects of machining including: -

  • Manual Turning & Milling
  • Grinding
  • Gear Cutting
  • CNC Turning & Milling
  • Knowledge of assembling and testing of precision aerospace components

Having had the opportunity to try the different aspects of the business, they may be given the opportunity to specialise in a particular area.

The apprentice must also strive to support the elements of the SQCDP framework of the wider Gardner business;

  • Safety: work in line with all accredited company safety standards in order to provide a safe working environment for all
  • Quality: support the quality accreditations across the business to ensure the delivery of a ‘right first time’ performance
  • Cost: support the continuous improvements in cost reduction activities across the company in order to deliver increased profitability and value for money to our customers and stakeholders
  • Delivery: drive improvement in delivery performance to continually exceed customer expectations and targets
  • People: support organisational capability and influence cultural change by embracing diversity, inclusion, wellbeing and community

Apprenticeship Engineering Operative (Standard) Level 2.


Core Knowledge

An Engineering Operative will understand:

  • How to obtain the necessary job instructions, engineering drawings and specifications and how to interpret them
  • Relevant statutory, quality, environmental compliance procedures/systems, organisational and health and safety regulations relating to engineering operations
  • Their individual roles and responsibilities within the organisation and the flexibility required to support the achievement of company targets
  • Engineering operational practices, processes and procedures
  • Potential problems that can occur within the engineering operations and how they can be avoided

Core Skills

An Engineering Operative will be able to:

  • Work safely at all times, complying with health and safety legislation, regulations, environmental compliance procedures and systems and other relevant guidelines
  • Identify and deal appropriately with any risks, hazards, hazardous situations and problems that may occur within the engineering environment within the limits of their responsibility
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills which include oral, written and electronic communications
  • Complete appropriate documentation accurately, efficiently and legibly using the correct terminology where required
  • Obtain and follow the correct documentation, specifications and work instructions in accordance with time constraints and the roles and responsibilities identified for the engineering activities, extracting the necessary data/information from specification and related documentation
  • Select and use appropriate tools, equipment and materials to carry out the engineering operation
  • Deal appropriately with any problems that may occur in the manufacturing environment within the limits of their responsibility
  • Work efficiently and effectively at all times, maintaining workplace organisation and minimising waste
