Craft / Mechanical Engineering Apprentice


Training for, working towards and becoming competent in the position of PLATER, WELDER or FITTER. This role would report on a day to day basis to our factory charge hand, although overall report would be to the Operations Manager.

What will the apprentice be doing?

Requirements and responsibilities:

1.   To provide basic hand tools associated with the execution of this job / trade.

2.   To prepare, set up and operate various equipment, tools and machinery.

3.   To supervise and identify any fault in the operating equipment / tools or in relation to any material or equipment, and providing notification of such faults to line management.

4.   To prepare, mark out, cut, bend, roll, assemble and tack-weld (or fully weld) parts and materials to form high quality and accurate fabrications in accordance with technical drawings, instructions, specifications, standards, best practice and company procedures.

5.   To clamp, hold, weld, heat-bend, bolt, or grind parts and materials as necessary to satisfy technical requirements and create a high quality welded fabrication.

6.   To control the processes of fitting, burning and tack-welding to avoid problems in relation to overheat, distortion, expansion or shrinkage.

7.   To prepare, assemble and fit parts and materials in accordance with technical drawings, instructions, specifications, standards, best practice and company procedures.

8.   To set up and carry out functional testing of finished products in accordance with technical drawings, instructions, specifications, standards and company procedures.

9.   To examine work in progress and finished items and check them against technical drawings, instructions, specifications and standards.

10. To keep the working area neat & tidy and have due regard (at all times) for the health & safety of yourself and those around you.

11. To work in a professional, diligent and courteous manner.

12. To wear / use PPE in accordance with company rules, instructions, and best practice.

13. To keep accurate records in accordance with the companies QA procedures.

14. To prepare and submit accurate timesheets.

15. To undertake any other duties as may be required from time to time.

16. To undertake specific training as may be required from time to time.

17. To fully support the development and maintenance of the business and the group.

General Welder - Level 2 - Working on site with Day Release to Derby College

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Initially into a Plater / Welder / Fitter role.

This could develop onwards into a team leader / chargehand role.
