Accessibility Statement

Home Accessibility

Derby College is committed to ensuring that this website is accessible to everyone. The website was developed in 2011 to comply with the latest W3C Accessibility Guidelines. If you have any questions or suggestions about the accessibility of our website please contact us.

Navigation and headings

The website has been developed to be as easy to navigate as possible with clear headings and page titles, as well as a breadcrumb trail at the top of each page. The fixed top level menu appears on all pages, making it clear to see which area of the website you are in and how to return to the home page.

Heading styles have been used throughout the site. If you have a screen reader you can navigate through content using headings alone. Please note that in some cases H6 is used for links to other pages in the site and H3 has been used for emphasis in some components, such as the course search box.

On most standard web browsers and screen readers you can use the below keys to navigate through the headings:

  • H to navigate forwards through the headings
  • Shift + H to navigate backwards through the headings
  • Shift + 1 to navigate to the previous level 1 heading (or a number between 1 and 6 to navigate to the previous heading on this level)
  • INSERT + F6 to provide a list of all headings

If you are using Opera, you can navigate the headings by using the s and w keys:

  • S to navigate forwards through the headings
  • W to navigate backwards through the headings

Adjusting text size

The website uses relative size fonts. This means that users can control the size of the text using their own browser. To change the text size in Internet Explorer:

  1. Select 'View' from the top toolbar menu
  2. Choose 'Text size' from the dropdown list
  3. Select the size most suitable for you

Design

The visual layout of the site is presented using style sheets. If you are using any viewing equipment that does not support style sheets, all the page content should still be readable. The colours used in the design of the site have been chosen to provide the best viewing experience for all users, including those who have a difficulty distinguishing between certain colours.

If you experience any problems in viewing the design elements of the website, please contact us.

Images and links

All images and non-text content of the website have alt text descriptions and captions. This means that users who are unable to view this content will still be able to read or listen to a description of the content. Alt text has also been used for links. Where possible we have made links descriptive to ensure they make sense out of context.
