This unique city-centre landmark was specially designed in a £12 million scheme offering state-of-the-art resources to meet the demands of learning in the 21st century and to keep pace with latest technologies and teaching methods.
Situated on Cathedral Row, the Joseph Wright Centre opened in 2005, providing 8,000 square metres of flexible accommodation over four storeys. Such was its instant success as the College’s specialist academic centre that it has since been expanded to offer even more social and study space. The new extension opened in April 2008.
Spacious, bright and welcoming, the building features a stunning glass atrium as a centrepiece which opens up to the top floor. Key facilities include nine high-specification IT suites, three well-equipped science laboratories, an art and design studio, a music suite, a lecture theatre, a large resources room and a range of classrooms.
There is also a wealth of opportunity for social interaction, with a student common room, restaurant and shop as well as a growing number of clubs and societies. The city location, together with cycle racks and underground parking, means the Centre is easy to reach no matter what transport you are using.
The building is named after one of Derby’s most famous sons, the 18th century painter Joseph Wright whose artwork captured the many scientific and technological advances of the Industrial Revolution. True to the spirit of Joseph Wright’s achievements, this new centre has become the ideal setting to advance your own career plans.
