Employment and Work opportunities

Work Placements

Work Placements are essential to give learners the chance to gain hands-on experience in the world of work. A work placement is a valuable and unique opportunity to give a learner an insight, before entering into their chosen career path.

The majority of full time learners at Derby College are required to complete a placement to compliment the course that they are undertaking but all learners are encouraged to take part. We have a dedicated team to ensure that, where possible, learners are placed in appropriate settings that are Health and Safety vetted.

The important thing about work placements is that they provide an opportunity for learners to get to grips with working life i.e. arriving on time, working with people of different ages and backgrounds, meeting deadlines and working as part of a team.

Whilst a placement may enhance a learner's knowledge and help with their college course criteria, it can also help them find out more about a specific job or industry.

The outcomes of work placements can include:

  • Clarifying future career goals
  • Gaining an insight into the way organisations operate and the challenges they face
  • Increasing skills and knowledge
  • Networking
  • Part or full time employment
  • Apprenticeships
  • A written reference to support future job applications
