Animal Magic At Festive Open Day

 

Visitors to Derby College’s Animal Unit open day on Saturday December 12 will have the chance to handle and learn more about the care of some of the more unusual residents.

The open day at the Broomfield Hall campus in Morley will be held between 10am and 4pm.

Derby College Plumbing Apprentice In Regional Competition

A Derby College plumbing apprentice has qualified for a prestigious national apprenticeship competition.Tom Smith is a Plumbing apprentice with Derby Homes and is studying his Level two qualifications at Derby College's Roundhouse campus. He will take part in one of six regional heats in February 2016 at Stephenson College in Coalville for a place in the national finals of the UK Heating Apprentice of the Year competition which will be held in April. T The competition is organised every year by HIP Magazine with the winner receiving a £5,000 prize.

Derby North MP Amanda Solloway has praised an initiative to boost young people's job opportunities and meet the recruitment needs of local employers. 

The President of Derby College Students Union (DCSU) has been elected to join the National Union of Students (NUS) National Executive Committee where she will be involved in developing and influencing policy that affects the 4.1 million Further Education learners in the UK.

 A former Construction apprentice at Derby College will take part in a national skills competition next week with his sights set on qualifying for the UK team.

Zack Lysaczenko from Chellaston won a place in the three-day UK Skillbuild final at Birmingham’s NEC National Skills Show (Thursday November 19 to 21) after representing Derby College in the regional competition earlier this year.

Hedgelaying is the ancient art of cutting hedgerows for regrowth. Countryside and Agriculture students have been learning this technique cutting broad leaved species and 'laying' them forming a stock proof barrier. This sustainable form of fencing helps the hedge to regrow and provides an important habitat for Broomfields wildlife.

Without any management hedgerows can become neglected and lose their value. Hedgerows have declined in Britain and so have the animals that rely on them. Broomfields Learners are playing their part to ensure this doesn't happen on the College Estate.

Television star Nick Knowles has visited Construction learnerss at the Hodgkinson Brickwork Academy at Derby College's Ilkeston campus to thank them for their involvement in the recent BBC DIY SOS Big Build project.

Derby College has teamed up with Microsoft’s UK Country Partner of The Year 2015, risual Limited, to open the East Midlands’ first risual Microsoft Academy. This will offer Microsoft qualifications for learners across the College, IT apprentices and employees at businesses across the region.

A former female Motor Vehicle learner has returned to Derby College to train the teachers who previously taught her in the latest automotive industry education software technology. Catherine Treanor from Duffield studied at Derby College as part of her Motor Vehicle apprenticeship at Station Garage in Belper.

Post Office revamp brings first class apprentice opportunities

A major post office makeover could lead to a first class career for two Derby College apprentices.

Raj Mohan, 41, subpostmaster at Kirk Hallam in Derbyshire, is joining forces with the College as he gets set to take on further responsibility for the post office across the border in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire.

 

Derby College Student Supported By the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust

A Derby College Music Technology student is due to feature on a BBC Lifeline television programme next week (Sunday November 8) – highlighting the support he has gained from the charity, the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust.

Curtis May (18) from Swadlincote joined the Trust’s Get on Track programme two years ago to help him overcome the challenges that he faced at school and home.

Ten academies aimed at producing work-ready youngsters and addressing skills shortages in key industries in Derby have been launched.

The Employer Academies have been set up by Derby College in partnership with several employers.
