The Animal Unit at Derby College's Broomfield Hall in Morley will be getting visitors into the Halloween mood on Saturday 21st October with the chance to get up close and personal with some of the creepy crawlies who are looked after by students there.

Millipedes, cockroaches and sun beetles will be just some of the insects that visitors can handle at the family open day between 10am and 4pm as well as some of the reptiles who are resident in the animal unit with special sessions on how to care for them at home.

The National Skills Academy for Rail (NSAR) has announced the launch of the National Training Partnership, a new skills initiative to help solve the growing demand for new talent across the rail sector.

The National Training Partnership will bring together NSAR's newly formed National Network of Colleges and Training Providers, the Training Alliance and Quality Assurance provision and will support the UK rail industry in achieving an integrated approach to education, professional development and training. Derby College is now a select member of the National Training Partnership for rail. The National Training Partnership creates a UK wide education and training supply chain to deliver apprenticeships and professional development to the UK rail industry.

National Date For Derby College Student

A mature student at Derby College has reached the National Finals of the Skillbuild Competition which will be held at Birmingham's NEC in November (16 – 18).

Haralds Jonans (37) from Chaddesden is originally from Latvia. He is one of more than 20 deaf learners who attend Derby College – supported by signers in the workshop and in lessons.

East Midlands Airport has launched a unique partnership with Derby College to showcase the wide range of career opportunities available to students and create a talent pipeline of potential job candidates for the company. There are over 7000 people working with multiple employers across the East Midlands Airport site - making it a fascinating career choice for young job seekers.

Derby College is one of the few colleges in the UK to run Aviation Operations study programmes at the Roundhouse campus in Pride Park. Current Derby College Student Union President, Carl Anderson has been highly commended in the Association of Colleges (AoC) Student of the Year Awards 2017.

Carl (18) studied ICT at the College and, having held the positions of student ambassador, vice-president of the Student Union at The Roundhouse site and Inclusion Champion, is now employed as President of the Derby College Student Union, voted for by his fellow students.

Bespoke Inns Start Search For Apprentice Brewer

Award-winning Bespoke Inns is working with Derby College to find an apprentice with the aptitude and passion for everything to do with craft beer and real ale to learn the trade at its fast-growing micro-brewery.

The micro-brewery was launched two years ago at The Boot in Repton and currently produces eight different real ales.

These are distributed and served at all of Bespoke Inns' pubs and restaurants – The Boot, The Dragon in Willington and Harpur's in Melbourne plus a few other selected outlets.

Derby College Students Experience Life At The Ritz

Two Catering and Hospitality students at Derby College have celebrated finishing their study programme by completing a week's work experience in the kitchens of The Ritz London.

Holly Rawlinson (19) from Chellaston and Sophie Brassington (19) from Normanton were originally part of a group of level three students, based at the College's Engine Shed training kitchens at the Roundhouse, who spent the day seeing behind the scenes at the world renowned hotel five-star hotel in Piccadilly.

Dirty Dancing Date at Iconic Roundhouse

The Roundhouse Events team based at the historic Roundhouse, Pride Park, are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the 'Dirty Dancing' film release, which has been a firm favourite with generations of movie fans.

This Autumn is the first time the beautiful Roundhouse will be turned into an indoor cinema on Saturday October 14, giving guests a chance to cosy up inside the historic building and enjoy a cinematic experience like no other.

Derby Museums Employer Academy

Derby College has teamed up with Derby Museums to provide additional opportunities for Travel and Tourism and Creative Arts students based at the Roundhouse and the Joseph Wright Centre.

The Derby Museum Employer Academy joins more than 20 other partnerships with local and regional businesses and organisations with students applying to be part of a year-long programme including guest speakers, special projects, work placements and mentoring support.

Derby College Performing Arts student Jordan Roebuck is using his talents to help adults express themselves through music and dancing at a community arts centre. Jordan, who is 18 and from Hilton, recently gained part-time employment at Steps for the Future after two years of volunteering with the Derby charity, based in Nottingham Road.

Steps is a dance and music group which provides "a safe and supportive environment where adults with differences can showcase their talent and flourish as individuals."
Jordan said: "It's great. I'm now leading some of the classes I used to volunteer at.

Derby College Expands Residential Provision

Derby College has expanded its residential accommodation offer to enable students from further afield to live at the Broomfield Hall campus in Morley seven days a week in term time.

The accommodation, which has an 'Outstanding' rating from Ofsted, is currently available Sunday evenings to Friday for students aged 16 and above.

Derby College's Broomfield Hall has topped the Landex UK league tables for student achievements at colleges who are part of the national organisation and offer land-based study programmes.

Broomfield Hall near Morley is one of 39 Landex land-based colleges in the UK and offers a wide range of land-based programmes including Agriculture, Arboriculture, Animal Care, Countryside Management, Equine, Floristry and Horticulture.
