Derby College has teamed up with colleagues at Gateshead College to launch a research project into the skills shortages and limited engagement in Construction degree courses.

The BRIDGE project has been supported by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) Catalyst Fund and has been prompted by a Construction Skills Network report which has highlighted a growing skills shortage in the industry.

Higher Education students at Derby College came under the spotlight at an awards ceremony at the Roundhouse to celebrate their success. The keynote speaker was Peter Dawber, Dean of Nottingham Trent University's School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment who talked about his career and stressed the importance of lifelong learning.

Maddie Kirkman is doing on-the-job training at GF Tomlinson of Little Eaton, as well as completing a two-year Level 3 Advanced BTEC Diploma in Professional Construction at Derby College. Maddie is helping to fly the flag for women in the construction industry.
