A Sports student at Derby College Group’s Broomfield Hall in Morley has clinched a coveted scholarship to study in the USA and play basketball for the college team.

Derby College Group (DCG) has teamed up with the HUUB Ribble junior and development road cycling team to create a performance academy for aspiring young riders.

Derby College Sports student Justin Taylor-Tipton (17) from West Hallam recently returned from Switzerland with a clutch more medals in Freestyle Skiing.

Justin, a former pupil at Kirk Hallam Community Academy, is studying Sports Coaching at the College's Broomfield Hall campus and spends the winter season training in Switzerland.

With the winter weather gripping the UK, Derby College students who are members of the Performance Golf Academy education and player training programme are currently preparing to go overseas for warm weather training.

The students will leave for Roda Golf & Beach Resort, San Javier, Murcia in Spain at the end of January to undertake a rigorous training & competitive programme, including daily Physical and Mental preparation, technical work on long game, short game and putting.

World superbike ace Alex Lowes and current leader of the British Superbike Championship Leon Haslam have officially opened Derby College's refurbished Fitness Centre at the Johnson Building in Pride Park.

The sportsmen are regularly put through their paces by personal trainer Kirk Gibbons who is based at the gym – using a wide range of the cardio and strength equipment that has been upgraded as part of the £70,000 refurbishment.

The Andrew Flintoff Cricket Academy, based at our Broomfield Hall campus in Morley has won the Association of Colleges (AoC) National indoor cricket championships held at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.

The team played four group games and topped the group having won three and lost just one. In the semi finals Derby beat Joseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College who represented the West Midlands and then faced New College Pontefract who represented Yorkshire and Humberside.

Members of the Andrew Flintoff Cricket Academy based at Derby College's Broomfield campus have reach the national finals of a colleges' indoor cricket competition. The team recently won the East Midlands AoC Sport (Association of College's) regional competition which was hosted by Derby College.

Personal trainer Jess Guest is the latest young person to land her ideal job thanks to a sports and leisure apprenticeship with Derbyshire Dales District Council. Jess, who is 18 and from Morton, now works full-time at Arc Leisure in Matlock after studying via Derby College while gaining valuable on-site work experience.

England National Coach Graham Walker will be making a return visit to the Performance Golf Academy Derby education and player training programme in April.

Graham, the England Golf National Coach has been acknowledged as being a driving force in the development of US MASTERS champion Danny Willett, in particular his short game.

Graham will follow up the visit he made in February, where he focused on and around the green, to work with the students on the wedge play and pitching in the morning sessions. The afternoon session will revisit short game and focus heavily on scoring skills.

Graham has a unique ability to connect with and inspire every level of golfer, which has brought him to the highest level of his Profession. In 2015 Graham was named England Golf Coach of the Year.

His ability to demonstrate what he teaches is unique, and even those who go on with their careers at the highest level never forget their time spent developing their talent with Graham.

Graham started his professional career in Derbyshire back in 1975 when he became Assistant Professional to Douglas Poole at The Chesterfield Golf Club. Since then he has worked at Lees Hall Golf, Hillsborough Golf Club and now runs the successful Walker's Golf Academy at The Oaks Golf Club outside York. Graham and his many pupils have enjoyed huge success at The Oaks and in some ways he has come full circle, helping members to enjoy their golf at a better level but still doing what he enjoys the most, developing Players of the Future.

Graham is a renowned putting, short game and wedge play specialist who makes developing the golf swing 'Feel-Real'.

Graham commented: "I am looking forward to revisiting and working with the students on the Performance Golf Academy at Derby and helping them to develop their talent and skills. I will be putting the students through their paces during my visits and pushing them to look at different approaches and methods to help them progress. It will be a tough and challenging day for the students but I am sure they will all enjoy it and take a lot from our sessions"

Performance Golf Academy Derby programme director Nigel Furniss commented; "We are most grateful to Graham for finding time to spend with us. Sharing his knowledge and experiences will be valuable for the students and will help them with their skill development moving forwards. We are all really excited to have Graham visit the Academy, both students and coaches alike."
