Construction students at Derby College Group (DCG) in Derby and Ilkeston now have the opportunity to gain industry-accredited training to boost their chances of securing a job in the industry.

Pupils from local schools competed in Derby College Group’s annual Schools Skillbuild competition held at DCG’s Construction Academy at the Roundhouse Technical and Professional Skills college.

Derby College Group (DCG) apprentice Jack Ellis has clinched a silver medal in the national finals of the Guild of Bricklayers skills competition held in Liverpool.

Pupils from local schools competed in three different construction skills challenges organised by staff at Derby College.

Pupils from Merrill Academy, Murray Park Community School, Ormiston Ilkeston Enterprise Academy, John Flamsteed Community School, and The Royal School for the Deaf Derby, competed in Brickwork, Painting and Decorating and Plastering challenges.

Derby College has hosted the national final of the Guild of Bricklayers' annual skills competition at its Derby Construction Academy.

Eighteen students and apprentices from throughout the UK attended the competition organised by the Guild of Bricklayers.

He was nominated by his Derby College Construction tutors Bill Bentley and Clive Smith for the Jewson award and was crowned the Best Young Tradesperson under 18 after impressing the judges with his skill and passion for the trade.
