Apprenticeship Opportunities at Derby College

Derby College is also holding an information evening at the Roundhouse in Pride Park on Thursday March 15 between 5.30pm to 7.30pm to give young people and adults the opportunity register for a wide range of apprenticeships available now and in the coming months.

The College currently has around 50 apprenticeship opportunities available in a range of industries from Business Administration and Hospitality and Dental Nursing and Manufacturing.

Apprenticeships Address Current and Future Skills Gaps

The 11th National Apprenticeship Week (NAW 2018) will run from 5 to 9 March 2018 with employers, apprentices and providers from across England celebrating the success of apprenticeships to encourage others to choose this proven pathway to a great career.

Whilst the focus is traditionally on young people aged 16 and above entering the workplace through an apprenticeship programme, an increasing number of employers are recognising the value of upskilling their existing staff through apprenticeship training.

Merger Talks Commence

Bilborough Sixth Form College and the Derby College Group (DCG) have started initial discussions about a potential merger earmarked for January 2019. 

More than 300 people attended Derby College's first Academy Awards which were held at the Roundhouse.

The event celebrated the success, achievements and commitment of employers, staff and students who are involved in the College's innovative Employer Academies and Employment and Skills Boards.

Derby College Student Union President, Carl Anderson, has attended a reception at the House of Commons to celebrate the success of present and past further education college students.

Carl was highly commended in the Association of Colleges (AoC) Student of the Year Awards 2017 and attended the event with Derby College Inclusion and Support Co-ordinator Peter Benyon who nominated him for the award.

Derby College Group Chief Executive Mandie Stravino has been appointed to a new national group of Principals who will advise the Department for Education on a wide range of matters.

FE Commissioner Richard Atkins has brought together seven Principals and Chief Executives from leading colleges across the UK to advise on skills policy including the development of T-levels.

Movie Nights at Iconic Roundhouse

Following the huge success of its first movie night, The Roundhouse Events team based at the historic Roundhouse, Pride Park, are holding two further evenings to celebrate iconic movies 'Pretty Woman' and 'Grease'.

The beautiful Roundhouse will be turned into an indoor cinema on Friday February 2 for a one-off showing of 'Pretty Woman' starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. Then on Saturday February 3 – the giant screen will show 'Grease' with Oliva Newton John and John Travolta.

Derby College Search For Alumni

Here at Derby College we are keen to hear from former students to further build its Alumni and highlight their career successes to inspire current and future students.

Derby College was formed in January 2002 as a result of a three-way merger – bringing together two former tertiary colleges, Mackworth and Wilmorton and a land-based College, Broomfield Hall.

The College further expanded in February 2002 with a merger with South East Derbyshire College in Ilkeston and Heanor.

Breakfast Club Inspiration for Derby College Leaders

Senior leaders at Derby College have visited Firs Estate Primary School in Raven Street to see the benefits of the new phase of the city's Breakfast Club programme.

The scheme, to offer funded breakfast's through local business to children across Derby city schools, is a collaborative project between Derby City Council, leading City entrepreneur Kavita Oberoi OBE, Aaron Thalman, Mike and Dana Copestake, Derby County Football Community Trust and HIS Church.

Derby College has further expanded its relationship with Derbyshire County Cricket Club with the launch of a third Employer Academy to better prepare young people for the world of work.

There are already two well-established Cricket Derbyshire Employer Academies – focusing on Sport and Catering and Hospitality.

Working in an award-winning traditional village pub and restaurant is the dream start to a career in hospitality for former Derby College higher education student Jack Bowler.

Jack, who is employed at The Boot – a 17th century coaching inn in historic Repton – is the first student to have benefited from the college's new partnership with Bespoke Inns.
