The students joined the East midlands-based IT company for a 17-week placement to enhance their studies and gain invaluable experience working in the IT sector.
Alfie, Yusuf, Qasim, Dylan and Brandon have all successfully received their certificates of completion and will now resume their studies at Derby College, with the added experience that allows them to focus on specific areas they may wish to pursue in their future careers paths.
“Working with RDS has helped me a lot,” explains Qasim. “I thought I wanted to do cyber security or software development but having now done engineering, I loved it, and engineering is definitely for me.
“CCTV was especially good. We made the cameras work; learned about the cabling; and tested the equipment to ensure everything was working correctly.
“Being given the opportunity and hands-on experience to do these things for myself, it has definitely helped me understand how to implement this into my college work.”
The group of five are the second set of academy students to work with RDS Global this academic year, and the rising popularity and success of the programme could see additional groups added into the mix next year.
Speaking about the benefits of the programme, RDS Global’s Director, Phil Harvey, said: “The students that come and work with us are already engaged in a core study programme in IT, but that only covers a fraction of what the industry is all about.
“Our aim is to help students truly understand the workings of the industry, not just from a practical standpoint, but from the customer’s and the employer’s perspective also. That’s why we get the students heavily involved in all areas of the business, from technical implementation and setup, right through to marketing and customer service.
“We’re extremely proud of the hard work and commitment put in by our academy students. They have demonstrated tremendous aptitude and a keen desire to learn. Everybody here at RDS wishes them all the best in their future endeavours.”
