A championship breeder has been appointed to manage Derby College's dog grooming salon at Broomfield Hall and is planning to expand the range of professional courses available to people looking to hone their skills in the growing industry.

Sophie Farnworth, a qualified veterinary physiotherapist and accomplished dog groomer, has won medals at various shows, including Crufts, for her Chinese Crested and Pug dogs.

Having originally specialised in horse care, she started grooming her own and other breeders' show dogs and has worked in the grooming industry for several years at managerial level.

Sophie explained: "Having worked with horses and dogs for many years, I was keen to get into teaching and I am delighted to be joining the Animal Care team here at Broomfield Hall.

"As well as working with the level three Animal Care students on their dog grooming modules and running the commercial salon here which is open to the public, we are planning new courses for adult learners looking to expand their skills or retrain to work in this growing industry.

"We have a successful level two City and Guilds dog grooming study programme and will be one of the few centres to offer the level three this September to help people progress further.

"Job opportunities in the dog grooming industry continues to grow and it is vital that the training is available to maintain and improve standards."

In addition, the dog grooming salon at Broomfield Hall is licensed by the Veterinary Medicine Directorate to provide companion animal licenced medicines including flea and worm treatments and has recently secured sponsorship from Wahl professional grooming product manufacturers.

Sophie and colleague Martin Tarakaniec are fully qualified with the Directorate and will be running certified training courses for pet store managers and other dog care professionals to enable them to dispense medication.

Sophie and the team are also planning short courses on canine first aid and dog massage as well as a series of education and awareness raising sessions to help dog owners better understand the health issues of certain dog breeds that are experiencing problems such as flat faced breeds.
