Derby College A Level Students Triumph In Olympiad Competitions

A-level students at Derby College's Joseph Wright Centre have won a clutch of awards in the British Olympiad competitions for Maths and Sciences.

Thirteen students have been presented with awards for Maths, Chemistry or Biology having completed papers in the subjects set by national bodies. They completed the timed exams at the College which were then marked and submitted for verification.

Among the students who achieved awards was Jake Brown (18) from Belper gained a Gold in Maths and a Silver in Chemistry.

He is sitting Chemistry, Biology, Maths and Spanish A levels this summer and is planning to return to College in September to take Physics A level is one year before applying to go to university to study Veterinary Sciences.

Fellow student Sytske Brakeboer (17) from Ilkeston who gained Silver awards in both Chemistry and Biology. Sytske is studying Chemistry, Biology and Maths at Derby College and is planning to apply to university after taking a gap year.

Meanwhile Derry Hughes (18) from Derby, Mitch Wilkinson (17) from Alfreton and Joshua Pipes (18) from Chaddesden all won Bronze medals in Chemistry and Michael Ashbee (18) from Derby won Bronze in Maths.

Other award winners were Blade Rumfitt, Tom Mossman, Liam Spencer, Sam Frearson, Eve Miles and Kate Dandy.

Head of the Joseph Wright Centre Stacey Adams said: "The British Olympiads in Maths and Sciences are designed to stimulate problem solving and are extremely difficult papers which are sat by thousands of post-16 students across the UK.

"Our students consistently achieve high grades in Maths and Sciences at A-level and I am delighted that this has been mirrored by so many of them scoring highly in this prestigious competition framework."
