The day started with a keynote speech from education and careers specialist Johnny Rich, which focused on the skills employers want from graduates and how we can help develop them. Delegates were then able to choose from a series of sessions where they got to hear about the scholarly activity of staff and students from Leicester, Derby, Central, ncn, Vision West Notts and Brooksby Melton colleges.
Derby College delivered the highest number of presentations among all the colleges represented with lecturers Melanie Lanser, Chrissie Draper, Kelly Parmar, Caroline Friel and Su Wall along with students Joanne Parker, Caffelia Burton and Emma Johnson, all giving presentations on projects they have been working on this year.
Melanie discussed enhancing opportunities for in-service trainees through an alumni/peer mentoring scheme, which leads to enhanced teaching and learning and better outcomes and destinations for trainees. Chrissie outlined findings and recommendations from her research project A recipe for relating: to explore the experiences of students referred to as reluctant learners, followed by her students Emma and Caffelia who explained their independent research projects.
Caroline and Su presented research undertaken by Caroline to consider the impact of working with the HE study coach on the grades of some of her students. And HE study coach Kelly spoke with student Joanne about strategies to engage students as partners in learning in relation to study skill and employability development. Kelly and Joanne will be presenting this research at the national AoC Research and Scholarship conference in Birmingham at the end of June. The day was a huge success and we have had some very positive feedback. One delegate commented that is was "good to hear about research and innovative work that is present and continuing in colleges" while another noted "I'm not alone. There's a pool of like-minded people to work with".
We hope to hold another conference next year and would love to get more presentations from Derby College staff and students as well as welcoming them as delegates. Contact Gail Hall, HE Scholarship Development Manager, for more information contact Gail Hall email@example.com
