Hair learners at Derby College's Ilkeston campus have completed an innovative project to celebrate the town's past, present and future.

Derby College has worked with Direct Help & Advice (DHA) Training and Advice Centre on Bath Street to run an educational prevention enrichment project for learners which is funded by Derbyshire Commissioners Crime Prevention Grant.

The Hair learners firstly compiled old photographs of the town, took pictures of how key buildings looked now and envisaged future developments. Showing impacts of change through crime and neglect. Working with DHA whom delivered the sessions and provided the cameras. They then took the inspiration of the photographic work to create retro, contemporary and futuristic hair and beauty styles and shared their work with fellow students at an exhibition and celebration event at the College.

The learners also organised a raffle as part of the event – raising £50 for Rainbows Children's Hospice in Loughborough.

Derby College Personal Coach Elizabeth Fitzpatrick explained: "The inspiration for the project was the fact that this campus used to the site of the former magistrates court and is now a College for students on a wide range of vocational skills. The project with DHA has been a great way for the students to find out more about Ilkeston's past, present and future and then relate that to their own course and how they can work to reduce crime in the area."

DHA Training and Programmes Development Manager Karla Cook added: "This has been an inspiring project as part of our overall work with the College to support young people with educational prevention activities helping to build reliance, confidence and an awareness of social issues and help them better prepare for adult life. We are very impressed with the work that the Hair students have completed."
