Meet the Governors

Jack Atwal

(Member of Standards Committee, Strategy Committee, Remuneration Committee and Search and Governance Committee)

Jack (Jagdev) Atwal QPM was born and educated in Derby and has been a police officer for 30 years. He has held senior positions in the police service since 2006 and worked both operational and community safety roles.

Retiring from his role as Chief Superintendent at the end of 2016, Jack was the senior police officer with overall responsibility for over 700 staff who police the areas of Erewash, South Derbyshire and the City of Derby. He is an accredited national assessor on the College of Policing's fast track and direct entry programmes and continues to assist with the design of the national promotion process. He has sat on a number of strategic partnership boards and is a volunteer with the British Legion and a City school. Jack was awarded the Queens Police Medal in the 2017 New Year’s honours list.

Phillip Dover

(Chair, Standards Committee, Member of the Remuneration Committee and Strategy Committee and Link Governor for Joseph Wright Centre and English & Maths)

Phil graduated from Nottingham University in 1981 with a Joint Honours in Chemistry and Biochemistry. He did a PGCE course at Sheffield University before starting his teaching career at Noel-Baker School in 1984 teaching Science. He moved to Lees Brook Community School in 1989 and over the years gained promotion to various leadership roles eventually becoming a Head Teacher in 2009. As Head Teacher he guided Lees Brook from being a Local Authority school to becoming a Trust School and then converting to an academy in 2011.

Phil has been a Lead Practitioner for The Specialist Schools and Academies Trust, planning and delivering to school leaders at conferences on the new Secondary Curriculum Design Programme. He was Chair of the SSAT Vocational Specialist Schools Steering Group and sat on the Head Teachers' Steering Group. He is a Local Leader of Education and a member of the Planning Group for the Derby City Secondary Head Teachers' Education Improvement Partnership. He has been invited to speak at government seminars and mentors newly appointed Head Teachers.

Hazel Clint

Hazel is a Senior Manager at Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK. Her current role is in Parts Flow Management. During her 23 years at Toyota she has worked in areas of Parts Ordering, Vehicle Planning with Sales & Marketing and Shop Floor Operations. Hazel is interested in supporting our members to work to the best of their ability and has completed a behavioural coaching course and has supported clients within the Toyota business.

Out of work she leads a jogging group in her local area. Hazel enjoys helping people to get the physical as well as mental benefits in a supportive environment.

Janet Morgan

(Chair of Corporation, Chair of Strategy Committee, Member of the Search and Governance Committee, Standards Committee and Remuneration Committee)

 

Janet is a partner in Smith Cooper, Chartered Accountants in Derby looking after a portfolio of small and medium sized owner managed businesses, providing a variety of services including audit, accountancy, tax compliance, business planning and corporate finance services.

She specialises in transaction support including purchaser due diligence, pre-lending reviews, completion accounts and advice on sale and purchase agreements.

Janet has an interest in further education as she believes this is a key area which benefits both individuals and communities. She sees Derby College as a progressive establishment and as a Governor can share her knowledge of running businesses to help it achieve its objectives.

 

 

Kate Cusick

(Staff Governor)

Kate has worked in the education sector for a number of years and is a firm believer that all young people should be given the opportunity to develop the skills they need to maximise their potential, whether this is via progress routes to higher education or employment with a suitable employer.

Previous jobs roles have afforded her the opportunity to sit in on corporation meetings and she has represented the firm she worked for at the time at a number of audit committees and as such has therefore gained a very good understanding of how college corporations operate and their importance in driving forward the strategy which makes a college successful enabling it to achieve the goals and targets set.

Graham Schumacher

(Member of the Standards Committee and Link Governor Employer Engagement and Commercial)

In his previous role Graham was responsible for training and development of 54,000 Rolls-Royce employees in 60 countries. In July 2011, he was made an MBE for lifelong services to apprenticeships and skills training.

Graham is Chair of the Derby Manufacturing University Technical College, an engineering school set up by University of Derby, Derby College and Rolls-Royce to teach and mentor 14 to 19-year-olds. He was Vice Chair of the Commission on Adult Vocational Teaching and Learning, a body that reported on the future state and resources for professional development in the skills training system.

Graham has also worked as a Commissioner on a cross party Skills Commission that carries out research and makes recommendations for skills policy reform.

His role at Rolls-Royce was made up of two parts: delivering training to the early career pipeline into Rolls-Royce and helping existing employees develop skills to support their contribution to the company.

Kevin Slack

(Chair of Audit Committee and Member of the Strategy Committee and Remuneration Committee)

Kevin is a Chartered Accountant and Managing Partner of Mabe Allen LLP Chartered Accountants based in Derby and is the Managing Director of the Financial Services business, Midland Financial Solutions Limited.

Kevin is also the Managing Director of the Ron Brooks Toyota Motor Group and is currently Chairman of the Finance Committee of the National Toyota Dealer Council.

Kevin has a strong financial and commercial background, coupled with a keen interest in training and developing people for the world of work by developing and enabling through various apprenticeship programmes and professional qualifications in Chartered Accountancy.

Mandie Stravino MBA

(CEO of Derby College, Member of the Standards Committee, Strategy Committee and Search and Governance Committee)

As the CEO of DCG, Mandie Stravino works in partnership with the Board to shape the direction of the organisation. Mandie is responsible for enactment of the corporate strategy and accountable for the Group’s performance.

In December 2017, Mandie was appointed to the Further Education Principals’ Reference Group. Its purpose is to support, challenge and advise the FE Commissioner in his role and contribute to the department’s policy development work affecting colleges in the FE sector.

Mandie has hosted some high profile visitors including HRH Princess Anne, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Prime Minister, the Secretary of State for Education and the Minister of State for Apprenticeships and Skills.

Mandie holds a variety of non-executive/representative roles, on the following boards: CBI Regional Council, Opportunity Area Board – Derby City, Derby Renaissance Board, Derbyshire Economic Partnership, Contest Gold (CT) Group, Metro Strategy Board - Derby City and Nottingham City, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Collaborative Outreach Programme (DANCOP) Governance Board, Midlands Engine Skills Group and the AoC National Quality Policy Group.

Mandie has a diverse leadership portfolio, in both the private and public sectors, has acquired significant experience in Further Education, both within colleges and an IPT and has a proven track record of leading strategic advancement resulting in financial, service and standards turnaround.

Mandie holds an MBA from Nottingham Business School – NTU and is currently studying at Said Business School – Oxford University, on the Further Education Strategic Leadership Programme.

Peter Lewis

(Member of the Audit Committee and Link Governor for Ilkeston)

Pete currently works for Her Majesties Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services ( HMICFRS) as a lead inspector, and is responsible for making assessments about the effectiveness and efficiency of police forces. Pete also assesses other lead inspectors, determining their level of competence against the "lead inspector " qualification being introduced across HMICFRS.

Whilst this role takes Pete all around the country he maintains a strong link to the Derby area and lives locally. He was brought up in the city and spent 30 years working as a police officer in various locations in Derby and the surrounding area. At the conclusion of this career Pete worked as an advisor to "Skills for Justice" and was involved in developing apprenticeships as a route into the police service, and the content of national occupational standards for police officers. He also spent some time working in the Serbian Ministry of the Interior supporting the Serbian national police force, in the development of strategic planning capacity.

Pete believes that the role that the college plays helping people gain skills and to progress is really important, and he is looking forward to supporting the college in its work.

Richard Brewell

 

Richard is employed by the global engineering giant, Rolls-Royce plc, with over 20 years experience in management and leadership roles, covering a broad range of operational and strategic activities. These have included people management and development, financial management, project management, risk management, HS&E and quality management & assurance.

Richard’s most recent appointment is as the Civil Aerospace Programme Management Lead & PM Academy. In this role, Richard has responsibility for developing the professional governance and people development framework against which the business can continue to mature it’s programme management capability.

Richard has held a lifelong belief in individual development and the importance of providing high quality further education which can directly support individuals’ career development opportunities. Richard sees Derby College as a quality, forward-thinking local academic facility that provides for all individuals looking to expand their knowledge, where as a Governor, he can share his business acumen to help develop the college’s strategic direction.

Mike Kapur

(Member of the Audit Committee)

Mike Kapur is a leading local businessman. He grew up in Derby, attending Castle Primary School and Homelands Comprehensive before moving to Leicester where he is Lord Lieutenant of Leicester. He has 23 successful years of Board Room experience in both private and public sector organisations, recognised in his appointment in 2013 to one of the Confederation of British Industry’s (CBI) most important National roles as Head of its Enterprise Forum, a position from which he led the CBI’s policy work in respect of SME’s and acted as the National figurehead for SME members and their issues including interfacing with Government and the European Commission on their behalf.

Mike started his career in 1985 at KPMG. In May 1993, he was “East Midlands Young Project Manager of the Year”. He then became the Director of Entrepreneurial Service at Ernst & Young and two years later, he moved to Parker Plant Limited, as Group Finance Director.

In 2002 Mike founded Signum Corporate Communications Ltd where he retains responsibility for ensuring that all aspects of company strategy are implemented and performance managed.

From 1995 to 2009 he played a leading role in the development of the NHS in Leicestershire, initially as a non-executive director at Leicester Royal Infirmary and, following its merger in 2000 with two other large hospitals he was retained as Deputy Chairman of University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, then the third largest trust in the UK.

Mike is Chair of the University’s Audit Committee, was appointed its Deputy Chairman in February 2012, and is a Pro Chancellor of the University, participating in key ceremonial events throughout the academic year. Mike is Chairman of the National Space Centre where he has instilled a strong sense of world class standards and focus on the long term.

In 2014 Mike was named Non-Executive Director of the Year at the Leicestershire Business Awards. In November 2016 he became a Non-Executive Director of Learning & Work Institute, in January 2016 he was appointed to the Board of Trustees of Leicester City Football Club Trust becoming Chairman in March 2017, and in April 2016 he became a Trustee of Warning Zone.

In June this year Mike was awarded and OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his services to Science, Technology, Business and Enterprise.

Martin Marples

(Member of the Audit Committee)

Martyn is an experienced Strategic Business Manager, and Director of Marples Financial Plus Ltd, a consultancy company specialising in finance. He is a Chartered Accountant with 25+ years of experience across public, private and charity finance & administration and is married with three children.

Martyn has a strong connection with Derby, having lived and worked in Derby and the surrounding area for most of his career, is a school governor, an Assistant Coach to his local football team and is a volunteer for Enterprise 4 Education, helping prepare school and college students to be ‘work ready’.

Andrew Cochrane

Andrew is a Solicitor, Chairman and Senior Partner of Derby Law Firm Flint Bishop LLP.

Andrew was educated in Matlock before attending the University of Aberdeen where he graduated with a Master of Arts Degree in Politics and International Relations before attending the College of Law, Chester and joining Flint Bishop in 1990.

Whilst Andrew has a background in Litigation and Employment Law he now specialises in Licensing acting on behalf of a number of national and regional pub, club, hotel and restaurant operators.

Andrew serves as Under Sheriff of Derbyshire, is a trustee of the Hubbub Theatre Company. He is a member of Foundation Derbyshire. He is also a member of the organising committee of the Derbyshire Brain Game. He was until recently a Governor of a large primary school.

Andrew was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Derbyshire in 2015.
