Course Information for Students

This programme provides opportunities for you to gain a nationally recognised and vocationally specific qualification to enter employment or an apprenticeship in the art, design and media sector. It also paves the way to other vocational qualifications in further education such as the Level 2 UAL in Art and Design.

You will participate in a variety of art, design and media-based projects which are both practical and theoretical. Developing an individual style and approach is encouraged.

You will need a profile of three grade 3s at GCSE or the equivalent. A creative or digital GCSE would be beneficial. You may, however, have a limited qualification profile due to personal circumstances.

You will attend an interview with a portfolio of art, design and digital-based work which will show your creative flair.

There are two units over the year and two pathways are offered: the Art and Design pathway or the Digital Media pathway.

Unit 1 Introduction to Materials, Processes and Technical Skills in Art and Design

You will explore a range of materials and processes used in art and design to develop your skills and gain experience and knowledge of what can and might be achieved.

Unit 2: Introduction to Contextual Research in Art and Design

You will explore the work of others, movements, cultures and new technologies and how that may affect or influence your own work and ideas.

As part of your study programme, you will be studying maths and English at either Functional Skills or GCSE level. Alongside this, you will also be participating in some work experience with local industries.

This course will be delivered on-site.

The course requires a studio fee of £25. This also provides you with a sketchbook and a basic tool kit. You will be expected to buy materials/tools to replace or improve your kit. There will be money required for trips. Support can be provided with meeting these costs through our Welfare Team (subject to eligibility).

Both units are assessed through coursework and project work. This could include working with others and employability skills such as presenting your work to others. The two units are graded as pass or fail.

Further Study

There is a variety of progression routes from the Level 1 programme. In the main these would be Level 2 programmes within the Creative/Digital faculty to include: Art and Design, Creative Media, Media, Music, Performing Arts, Games Development and Fashion Business.

Careers

The study of Art and Design could lead to a range of careers in a variety of industries, including graphic design, architecture, product design and games, or as a freelance practitioner in the creative industries.
