Course Information for Students

This course is designed for young people who are interested in getting a new or first pet and in learning about the animal’s husbandry, health, handling and general care. The course will consist of a classroom-based session learning about the animals and then a practical activity where participants will be able to handle, health check, feed, clean and get to know the animals more.

It is a perfect choice for parents who would like their child to learn and understand the requirements of caring for the pet they are asking for.

There are two courses available: Small Animals (rabbits, guinea pigs and rodents) and Reptiles (snakes, lizards, geckos and tortoises).

Children will receive a certificate of completion for their chosen course.

Participants need basic literacy and numeracy skills plus some basic knowledge of animal care. They should be aged six years or over.

The course will cover:

  • Theory of housing, feeding, cleaning, welfare, handling, health issues and general care
  • Practical session on feeding, cleaning, handling, health checking and confidence building – so that one day participants can have the animal as a pet

The course is based at the Animal Unit on the Broomfield Hall campus.

Participants will be required to supply their own boots or wellingtons – preferably steel toe-capped. Alternatively they can borrow some from the Animal Unit.

A packed lunch and drink is required for the day.

There is no assessment but participants will obtain a certificate of completion.

Derby College Group offers a range of animal care courses and other short courses in animal care such as keeper for a day, junior zoo club and canine first aid. Please see the Derby College Group website and Part-time Prospectus for a full list and details.
