Course Information for Students

If you have a keen interest in starting employment in the security industry, this programme develops your knowledge and skills in this area, while also providing you with qualifications to apply for your SIA licence.

Starting in February, this 18-week course is aimed at students aged 18 or over with a desire to work as a security officer, CCTV operator or door supervisor. It is essential that, before starting on this course, you are able to produce the requisite identification documents needed to study the qualifications on offer.

In both practical and theoretical settings you will study and experience what it is like to work in this industry.

Candidates must be aged 18 or over and MUST have the required identification documentation as listed below:

One of the following from Group A:

  • Current valid passport
  • UK driving licence issued by the DVLA
  • An original UK birth certificate
  • UK biometric residence permit card

Two of the following from Group B:

  • Bank or building society statement from the last three months
  • A utility bill from the last three months
  • A credit card statement from the last three months
  • A council tax statement from the last 12 months
  • A mortgage statement from the last 12 months

A letter from the last three months from any of the following:

  • HM Revenue & Customs
  • Department for Work & Pensions
  • Job Centre Plus
  • Local Authority
  • P45 or P60 tax statement from the last 12 months

We would also request that you have at least one passport-sized photo available.

The course is designed around the vocational skills and knowledge required to work in the security industry.

You will have four formal assessments to complete. These are:

  1. First Aid at Work
  2. Working as a Security Guard
  3. Working as a CCTV Operator
  4. Working as a Door Supervisor

Assessments will take place approximately every four weeks.

This course will be delivered on-site.

On completion of the course you may wish to apply for an SIA licence at an additional cost of £190.

You will need to have a uniform that is worn every day and when you are on work experience. The minimum expectation for the uniform is that you wear a plain black T-shirt or polo shirt and sweatshirt etc. A warm wet weather coat is recommended.

All learners would benefit from having their own tablet or laptop to aid them with their studies.

For some aspects of the course you will be supplied with a high-viz jacket or vest.

Each of the formal qualifications requires an assessment based on your competency and skills. There will also be exams, presentations and assignments alongside practical demonstration of skills.

Careers

This course is designed for students wishing to start employment in the security industry as a door supervisor, CCTV operator or security guard or to apply for the special constabulary or prison service.

Public Services course opens new horizons for Amy

It was so good. I'd recommend it to anybody, particularly if you don't know exactly what you want to do. It opens your eyes to so many opportunities and to jobs that you probably had no idea were even out there. I've learnt a lot on the job and I learned a lot at the college – it's definitely helped a lot on the customer services side of what I do. I feel like I've got a career for the future that I'm enjoying and it wouldn't have happened without the contacts the college have.
